In this picture, the hat appears to look alright. Obviously, without seeing it in real life, and getting a more "organic" view of the situation, I can't say this with any amount of confidence at all.

Try wearing the hat at different angles. If you give your forehead more scope, perhaps you will not feel goonish, as with that low dive front you've got going on here.

Hopefully you have tried the look of this hat with something other than that trench, as others have recommended.

Let me tell you, when I was a kid that hat fell down over my ears and would spin around like a top! Now it sits like flower pot on the top of my head! When I was little, my Dad seemed like a giant - I find it hard to believe his head was so small - I'm a 7.5 myself!

I don't really wear this one at all, it sits in a place of honor with a batch of my Dad's old stuff. Glad you like it, but it's just too small for me.

LOL like I said the goon thing is more of a joke, but, yea at 6'2 230 lbs, and 19" across the shoulders, I look like a goon no matter WHAT I'm wearing.

First hat, brims smaller than I expected, almost stingy I suppose. Not my bag so I'll use this as a practice hat, since it's dinged up, and then sell it off.

I'd like to echo what Dewhurst said. You have the brim pulled down, really low over your eyes. While you look in a mirror, put your thumb under the brim and gently push up till you reach the point that looks best. You may have to push down on the back of the crown or pull down on the back brim.

In other woprds, show just a little more forehead. You may like what you see.

The cell phone was later found wrapped in a necklace chain, in the deep end of the bathtub, authorities believe it failed to pay it's protection money to a local goon.

As far as wearing it low, that's 4 years in the Marine Corps making it hard to wear ANY hat with the brim higher than two fingers above the bridge of the nose.

The cool thing is, it matches my Armani shirt. I still need to get the brim to flatten out, it's curled up on the sides still like a western from the shipping box.

Madcap, Can you tell us who made the hat and any other information on the sweatband and liner? The proportions don't look bad in the picture and you may have options regarding what you can do with that hat should you elect to keep it. I'd like to see it with a sportcoat or suit.

It's a Stetson Royal DeLuxe, 7 1/4 in size. I JUST looked inside the sweatband and it still has a "to replicate" tag, stamp dated jan 4 1961 and in pencil "b2426"

The sweatband it's self has the run of the mill Stetson markings, and was made for the "Pantke Harpke Co." in Milwaukee. No telling what the original brim was, probably whatever was standard at the time. But now it's 2" in front and back, and tapered on the sides.

Hmm after posting the pics in the grey polo, it sort of reminds me of some of the hats from the early bond films.

And for some reason, seeing it dated to 1961, I'm a little more OK with the short brim...

I know I'll get some slack for this, but maybe try it with a different coat. I usually wear my fed 4 with a columbia parka, it changes it from a goon to a goof.

I usually wear my campdraft with a leather jacket or field coat for the "outdoorsy" style.

regardless of how / what you wear there will always be someone looking at you with dumb expression on their face.

Confidence and hat wearing

I think you look just fine in the hat. I always felt wearing a hat was more of a confidence thing. Wear it with confidence and you will like yourself in the hat (any hat).

It's a blue pinstrip, w/ vest. My Dad wore it into the range with my OTHER AWC I gave him, (the AWC looks better in real life, especially with a suit)

Well, I live in Lake Forest Park and got the hat bug last November. Now I have five Akubras--two Federation IVs, a David Morgan Adventurer, a DM Bushman, and an Akubra CEO. I wear one of them every time I go out, and they often inspire me to dress nicer than I would have otherwise. Just tonight I ate at the 125th Street Grill and wore a charcoal sport coat, pale blue Nautica shirt, and a silk J. Garcia tie. I topped it off with my moonstone Fed IV Deluxe. For Thanksgiving we ate at Arnold's Seafood in Edmonds, and I wore a light grey silk sport coat, similar shirt and tie, and topped it with my cruiser grey CEO. Sometimes I put on a silk tie for a trip to Costco just for the hell of it. The way I figure it, you only go around once; why not do it with some style, panache, and a splash of color?

So watch out Seattle, we're out there and our numbers are growing. Madcap72, you're not alone.

BTW, I think the Federation IVs will give you just what you're looking for.

Yea it seems the fed 4 is just the size I'm looking for. I've met David Morgan a few times when I was a kid, my Mom sold his stuff from our catalog. He pulled out his collection of whips for me to look at, everything from old Egyptian to the ones he made for the original Indy movies.

I believe we'll have to get a Seattle area get together one of these days.
Depending on everyone's location, I'm Saying the Three lions in Redmond, it's the only bar/ restaurant I know of where people would actually be impressed by a gathering of well dressed people (as opposed to bewildered). It's also decently located.

But, my favorite part, is it has a vintage feel without being over the top about it, it's populated by an older crowd, many from out of country (I.E. used to seeing people in more than jeans and a T-shirt) and friendly staff.
no pool, but they do have real steel darts. Also, no loud music. Just soccer, rugby, CART/F1/top gear, or cricket on TV.

One of buddies kidded me about my 'new look' because he had never seen me in a fedora, he called me 'Charlie Chan' & I had to point out that Detective Inspector Chan of HPD always wore a homburg, clarifying that I am indeed a crime geek :eusa_doh:
