Ok, against my better judgement I'm adding one of me. Its a tip of the hat to Caity for being the first reply. (Also holds the brim where I really want it to be) For the record they were asking $40 and I got it for $30. I'd love to have the side view look like Jimmy the Lid's avatar hat. No need to worry about marital problems (I had those about 5 years ago). Maybe the hat will get me a date!

Anyone know anything about Superior Hat Co.?

I would have to say if you are blaming us for that hat and "the look" you have chosen, all I can say is YOUR WELCOME :cheers1: :D

Welcome to the lounge, Bill, and to our hat "misery." ;)

Congratulations on that find. It's a beauty. Try giving it a bit of steam and then rolling it over a Pringles can or some other tubelike hat tool to give it the snap you want. It'll work.

This is like a rookie stepping up to the plate for his first at-bat and knocking it out of the ballpark on the first pitch:

1. Great hat
2. Great price
3. Great condition--the crown size and shape and brim width indicate this hat may be from the '40s or even the '30s. Even some never-worn hats from this era have moth bites, shrinkage, wrinkling, and discoloration, but this one looks totally intact.
4. Great fit
5. Looks to be excellent quality
6. And most important, it fits your face and looks great on you. Not everyone can wear those straight-sided, high-crown pre-war fedoras so naturally.

Very, very nice, buler! :eusa_clap Congrats!!!

The current appearance of the front of the brim is at least partly a function of the fact that the brim needs to be snapped down closer to where the side dents are located. Before doing anything in terms of steam shaping, put the hat on your noggin, grab the brim with both hands just in front of your ears, and snap the brim so that the break is farther back. Now take a look at the appearance and see how you like it. Experiment with this technique to see where the break looks best on you. If need be, you can then "set" this new break point with steam.

Best of luck!

Cheers,
JtL

It's nearly perfect look for you, Bill. You've obviously done something to please the hat gods.

A couple of nights ago I shared Casablanca and the Maltese Falcon with my two daughters. They loved the films. Maybe that did it?

I did google around a little for anything on Superior. Found this ad on the bay. Says it from 1930 and references the Superior Hat Co. out of St. Louis.

Neat you found a hat that suits you so well on the first try.

On steaming, if you want to avoid cooking the sweatband (found out the hard way) apply steam from a kettle as was suggested previously and be sure to steam only on the crown side of the hat.

I think Johnny covered it quite well.

You pretty much stole that beauty for $30.

buler, that's a beaut! reminds me of a correlative:

back in the 1980 I decided to get into motorcycling. I'd never ridden one, but that didn't stop me from buying a Honda GoldWing, the nicest bike I could find, in my estimation.

Congrats on that super lid, and welcome. Enjoy the fever!

Wow, buying a wing as your first bike is certainly diving into the deep end. Speaking of cycles my only other craigslist purchase was this spring when I found a bike identical to the one I owned (and crashed) back in 1985. Its a 1984 Honda Nighthawk S and it only had about 8,000 on it when I found it in May.

Here is a pic right after I cleaned it up.

Buler that totally suits you....

You have a Viggo Mortenson thing going on there too

Wow, Viggo Mortenson?! Um, I'll take your word for it.

Thanks

I worked on fixing the brim today and I'm starting a new thread to show how I did it.
