I cheated! And with a co-worker whom I like BETTER! What to do?!

3 years ago I told my stylist (who had been cutting my hair for 12 years) to do what she thought would work for me.... I got a mullet! I now go to a walk in salon and have many different girls and haven't had a bad hair cut! I never said anything to her but my sister and mother also left too and my dad has taken to cutting his own.

It's happened before, it will happen again. If you are close with her then talk to her if not you'll be fine.

That situation you are/were in is one of my worst nightmares!

I simply could not do it I would be most embarrassed, as I say, a horrible, nightmarish situation!

I would had to find a different hair salon altogether.

Honestly, I'm starting to think along these lines!

I think what I'm going to do is see the new girl for a free bang trim in a few weeks since she cut my hair last. I can explain, if I see my usual stylist, that I want to have the other girl do it since she had an idea for my bangs that was new and I wanted to try it. If it goes well again with the new girl I think I will schedule my appointment with her on a day my old stylist isn't in. I can say I had a schedule change and can't make it when she's there. Or maybe start anew someplace. OR SHAVE MY HEAD.:eeek:

I read through this thread and found it all very interesting and really full of helpful ideas about breaking it off with your stylist. And I think that this thread has to win some sort of reward for the title.

....And it reinforced the fact that I'm going to be cutting my own hair for the rest of my life.

Did you cut it to a middy? I remember you were considering it.

I'm going to be honest here, I've changed stylists several times in my life, a few times within the same salon. I've never worried about hurting someone's feelings, I just start seeing the new person and don't really make a big deal out of it or try to explain it. I'm sure this happens often in salons and the stylists understand.

This is your hair and your money, and there's no reason you should feel badly about seeing someone who does what you want.

That said... I'm curious if you told your previous stylist that you weren't thrilled with the last few cuts? There is no way she can improve something if she doesn't know it isn't what you want.

Yes, but not in those words. I said it wasn't working for me and explained why.

I did a long layered cut. I basically followed C-dot's helpful tutorial to split it into those sections with the ponytails, and then cut each segment 20 inches from my scalp. It is a lot lighter now. Unfortunately I set it twice and had bad results each time. (It was too "well conditioned" to hold the curl and I didn't use any setting lotion or hairspray.) I really do like it though, and am going to continue to do a layered cut using the tutorial. It was a lot faster to set than when it was all one length (I lost 9 inches off of what is now the longest layer, so I have a lot less hair).

I may try the middy someday, but that is going to be a couple years in the future when I'm not looking towards interviews.

Having had time to reflect on this in a more objective manner, I have decided to try a different salon, one in my town that has received many good reviews and has an active fan page on facebook. "O" and I grew apart about six months ago so any new attention will be viewed by me as positive. I don't want a rebound stylist. I want a new relationship, something completely different! Staying at the salon and simply trading to a new one there isn't what I want. The newer one is OK, but I want to be more adventurous!

Here is a question for you ladies: Is it important for you to have your hairstylist take a proactive role in deciding how to cut and style your hair? For example, we all want someone to "get" what we are asking them to do, and dread getting something quite different, but I also want someone to give me new ideas. I have been in a rut for too long, mostly out of fear of getting another mullet!

There is no guarantee I won't chicken out after talking all this smack and will go crawling back to O!

Not at all, for me personally (but that is probably because I both have background in hairdressing, and am anal-retentive to such an extent that I cut my own hair.) I have never had to worry about my hairdresser "getting" what I wanted because I told her very precisely what I wanted and how I wanted it to be done (but in a nice way!) so much so that she couldn't possibly misunderstand me.

I've also had the same hairdresser since I was knee-high to a grasshopper, so our communication is as good as it could get!

I think it's really easy to get stuck or used to the same style all the time and I think that it's good to have the honest opinion of someone who is used to looking at hair all day.

Also, as a stylist I will say that frequently whenever I have a client whose hair I'm used to and whose style/personality I know ask me for a suggestion and take my advice they always leave happy. I feel like part of what people pay for when they come to me is not only my ability to cut but also my understanding of hair types, face shapes etc. and my advice. When people who come in and are not interested in my advice, don't know how to ask it, or can already give me the play by play of what they want I always wonder why they would pay all the money to come to me when if they know exactly how they want it they could just go to someone cheaper. I feel like people should take more advantage of their stylists.

You should try to communicate that to your stylist. explain the realm of what you want and then ask for advice and opinions. any good stylist will work with you, just let them know you want their advice.

I did that already to no avail which is why I am moving on to a new gal.

I just did it. My appointment was coming up next week, and I was going to call to cancel and schedule at the salon I wanted to try. However, I read some more online reviews and decided to go with what I know- the new-to-me gal, the one with whom I "cheated." I found out that she is more expensive because she is a higher level. Luckily for me, she comes in an hour earlier than "O." Now, I am likely to bump into O on my way out, BUT I explained to the receptionist that first thing in the morning is better for my schedule. I will say the same thing to O if she asks. Then if I still love the results I will be more honest next time and say "I just wante to change things up" or something.

Can't believe I spend this much time thinking about this.

PrettySquareGal that sound a pretty good plan to me, I would not worry about a next time, just keep with schedule idea as these can change from month to month,
