Hurricane Sandy

Remember...Irene made landfall in North Carolina before it made its way north. We absorbed much of that storm's energy so that what affected points north were basically Irene's post landfall remnants. Also, Irene's track after landfall was essentially from south to north as opposed to Sandy's projected from east to west track.

Sandy bypassed North Carolina Saturday and yesterday. We got some very bad weather from her, but her center was never closer than 250 miles from Cape Hatteras. Unlike Irene, with Sandy there will be no previous land interaction lighten her impact at land fall.

More importantly, Sandy is approaching the coast at a right angle, whereas Irene skirted north almost parallel to the coast. That will make a big difference with respect to how much storm surge Sandy will likely push onto the northern half of New Jersey and western Long Island.

Well, my sister in Philly reports they're getting some heavy winds right now. With school and work all closed, we're just sitting and waiting. I'm hoping we don't loose power, or that if we do, it's not for long. Hope everyone else out there is safe.

I keep harping on this but it needs to be harped on. Surge is the main concern with this storm. Surge kills during the storm. Freshwater flooding kills after the storm. Rain and wind are generally only sideshows. They only destroy property.

If you live near the coast on land that is just above sea level...then leave...especially if you've been asked to evacuate. If you have friends and loved ones who are similarly situated...make them leave with you.

+1

And don't forget, do NOT drive through water, even if it looks only a few inches deep. You never know whether there's more coming, or whether there's a deep drop-off just beyond sight.

My work was cancelled. Wind and rain is whipping around, but nothing crazy yet. I took the dog for a walk and it was like a ghost town! Not a soul on the road. Keep seeing pictures on my FB of the Atlantic City area being underwater.

Well as Lizzie said, wind, but not really much rain yet. I gotta drive 45 miles south to pick up my youngest from his school (my oldest got out at noon up here, go figure) Winds are supposed to kick up after 2pm. I'm being cautious, but not overly worried. Will pick up more supplies when I get home.

On Hiatus. Really. Or Not.
Just made a quick dash to the local grocery store (about 200 yards from the house). LOTS of staples still left on the shelves, but DAMN... no more Dogfish 60 Minute IPA. (Pretty much what I expected.)

Since my return (about 10 minutes ago), the sustained winds are up to about 40+ with some nasty gusts. Glad I was able to squeeze the second car into the garage.

My heart goes out to all of you on the shores and everywhere closer to the coast. This IS a nasty one...

Around here, we are all concerned about Sam's safety. The brewery is not too far from the beach. Sandy better not disrupt the brewing! ;D

I went to work but fortunately was sent home, so now we are all housebound. My 7 year old is making my ears bleed but I'm happy to be here just the same ;)

Like many of you, the rain is not yet the issue, it's the wind. We are surrounded by trees so every huge gust is making me cringe.
