Humphrey Bogart Hat Question

Can anyone think of a movie or photo where Bogie wears a fedora that is (or appears to be) dark gray or black?

It's one of those silly personal curiosities. I'll explain later, but it's a boring story.

Bogart wore a LOT of hats

Oh my. Dark gray? Black? Look at the following:

Angles with Dirty Faces
Crime School
Maltese Falcon
Casablanca
The Roaring Twenties
Brother Orchid
High Sierra

Too many to choose from. Why do you ask?

The reason for asking (I told you it was a little boring) is when people ask if my dark grey fedora is my Indiana Jones hat (and you all know we get that question with any brimmed hat), I can say "No, it's my Humphrey Bogart Hat, like the one he wore in [insert movie title here]. My Indy Hat is at home."

Andykev, thank you for the suggestions. I am currently watching Bogie's movies one at a time, when I have free time (about 1 a month!), and that is not fast enough. Thank goodness for the IMDB, you can see stills from all those movies. Casablanca and Angels With Dirty Faces both have very good likenesses. I am sure there are more, but at least now I have my reference.

Guess that's why I like "Sepiatone" - it adds a whole new dimension.

The black and white movies allowed us to imagine it whatever we wanted to - we actually exercised our imaginations. How long will it be until the "High definition" won't be good enough?

It's funny to find color stills from the black and white movie and tv sets. The colors they used could be garish but they looked right on camera.

Sorry, I don't have any pictures to actually back this up. [huh]

I believe the better directors knew what colors to use for contrast so the b/w movies looked "Right"

I agree - some of the military WWII footages that are in color look so different from "12 O'Clock High" that it is amazing.

The hat Bogart wore in " The Big Sleep" was a Stetson The Royal Stetson. It is a great hat. I wish I had more of them. The colorized hat looks like a Knox Vagabond.

You are right!

The scene where Bogart is "given a working over" by two thugs in the alley, while Elisha Cook looks on (later explaining when asked "Im no kibbitzer"), you can freeze the film (good DVD/Hi-Def TV) and see the label inside the hat: Royal Stetson. Classic.

Bogart wore all kinds of hats...he liked caps too. But I think his favorite hat was the baseball caps he wore on his beloved "Santana". I think even some "Skipper" yachting hats too.

My favorite Bogart hat is the color and style from both Maltese Falcon and Big Sleep.

Funny, I have been wearing hats for about 10 years now...and comments like "Here comes the Daily Planet" , to "Indy" have long since stopped. Maybe 'cause I'm 50 now...

I had one guy up at our gun club (Skeet) tell me "I didn't recognize you with that baseball cap on. It's not your regular hat". See...when you shoot your first "25" straight in Skeet (or Trap), the squad gets to "shoot your hat". And they don't care that I usually wear a $500 Monticristi Panama. You should see the look when they are told what such a hat costs, and there is no way in hell anyone is gonna blow my hat to bits!...so I wore a bb cap...and yes, got the 25 and yes, they shot the hat.

I've only got a high score of 23, but I'm working on it. I don't belong to the local gun club, a bit pricey, but the public range has skeet or trap available 3 days a week. I love shooting as much as I love hats (and clothes).

Good move Andykev. I like skeet and trap, but far prefer sporting clays over the others. Likewise I prefer a nice brimmed hat for shooting, I like the litefelt beaver majormoore made me, it is now my favorite.

What is your preferred shotgun. Mine is the O/U Beretta 687 Silver Pigeon w/32"bbls and 682 Gold Sporting also 32"bbls. They are great natural pointers for me.

For real birds now the hats stay the same, fur felt is always preferred, but the gun changes. I really like my Baikal O/U 20 guage with 26" bbls., however I always have the 687 w/me. Have a 2nd set of 28" bbls that work great for hunting when it is all field and no trouncing through underbrush.

My Federation is great for shooting and shooting. Akubras are just tough and I have logged many a shoot and hunt with them.

I just tell people it's MY hat.

Most of the time the exchange goes:

"Cool hat." Or "Nice hat."

And I reply, "Thank you."

Usually that is all that's necessary. ;)
