I would LOVE to see a breakdown of men's viewing of women using similar criteria. I know what I would guess … even in 1941!

I have a feeling that today's and yesteryear's wouldn't actually be that much different. I've always heard that the first thing a woman notices about a man is his eyes. I read this a while back. I still do believe that is true, but where it's importance lies now, I'm not sure. I'm fairly sure that it's probably within the top five (along with smile!).

Also, since so many of the items they point out (that not too many men wear today), I believe the emphasis might be much more on the physique of the man than his clothes. The only thing I might say still has importance (to some degree) is a man's shoes. I do notice a man's shoes for some reason.

It's very well known that the first instinctive thing women do is check the shoulder to waist ratio, and the apparent strength of the arms, legs and buttocks. (Fitness to provide/hunt & gather). Note on the picture above the number of spots centred around the chest, shoulders and waist.

Men, on the other hand, are programmed to first check out waist to hip ratio (child bearing) and secondly breasts (child rearing).

None of this involves thought, and the brain has done all the work in about 10 seconds, tops. This would provide a rather different picture to the though-based picture above.

Me, I always look first at the slope of the forehead. Without brains, there's no need to look any further.

I look at the face first, then the posture. Not to determine if I'm attracted or not, but in order to determine "friendly - aggressive - wary - happy - scared". That's the primary part of any social interaction for me; settling what sort of interaction it's going to be. I think that's pretty standard human behaviour, actually. Like a dog checking out the ears and tail of another dog.

My ex told me when he took some neurology classes that I had the exact eye pattern movement during convos that is considered most socially comfortable by others. Eye - eye - mouth - eye - eye - mouth... So I probably stay on the face mostly.

If I'm checking him out, though... That's a whole different kettle of fish. I usually don't do that until he's said at least three smart things because that's the first flicker of attraction. Up until that I don't give a flying fox what he looks like as long as he seems friendly.

ETA: I wonder what the hat-starers look at today. Hair?
