How vintage are you?

Well clothing is considered vintage after 25 years, it's (almost) 2007-25 = 1982.

So anything made before 1982 is vintage. Some even use 20 years as a mark of vintage, so 1987.

Antique is another matter. What is that now, 75 years? That's 1932, or the start of the "Golden Era."

Pretty scary. But in the end it's all just old clothes.

Is that 75 years everywhere for items to be classed as an antique? I was told (in the UK) antique is 100 years. Mind you the source for this gem of information was my Mum, so maybe she was worried she could be classed as an antique, thus added a few years.

Strictly, an antique is 100 years old.

I personally wouldn't call anything Post- 1960 Vintage and retro is anything from then to about 1985, IMO.

I think that should be listed as a strict rule on ebay.

That was definitely not well clothing in that ad. That was sick clothing.

 1932!!?!?? 1932 wasn't that long ago! Antique is buggy whips and gas jets and hoop skirts and foot-pump organs and opium in the soft drinks. I prefer to think of 1932 as Laughably Primitive Modern.

Items that get hard use are antique earlier than other items apparently. I did look this up before I responded in my earlier post. Antique furniture is something made before 1830, but that has changed, now that there is a lot of stuff that is more than a hundred years old, so that there is a "100 year rule" for furniture. However, rugs are considered antique after 60 years (at least in the states, I know the UK is more strict about it). It used to be that any clothing made before 1920 was considered "antique" at the antique and vintage textile shows, but soon enough 40's stuff will be antique. It's almost 2007 already.

What happens in in 20 years when a 1967 dress is 60 years old? I might not like everything that is vintage, but like it or not, after a while we are going to have to revisit what "vintage" is. I used to wear 40's vintage and 60's stuff in the 1980's and that was 25 years ago.

I usually use retro to mean something that is contemporary retrospective design which reinterprets styles from the 1920s to the 1980's. But that's just my opinion.

There are a lot of vintage and antique items that I personally find revolting. Just because something is vintage doesn't mean that I like it. There is a question of taste too. I mean it's not like everyone here loves vintage zoot suits. Some do, but they aren't to every one's taste.
