How tough is basic training these days?

I enlisted at seventeen, and got sent down to the 1st Infantry Training Brigade
at Ft Polk, Louisiana; bequeathing many fond memories that I cherish and hold close
and dear within my heart. One of these most cherished sweet recollections occured near
the end of the initial cycle, when after weapons'qualification there occurred a thirty mile
march back to the company barracks. Around midnight, I took off my boots to find the
green issue socks colored brown, and tearing these off, found my feet caked in blood. All the
drill cadre were Rangers, and all had rotated back from 'Nam. So this drill
sgt walked past my bunk, saw my tootsies, and smiled. Then he told me to
get my sorry a.. over to the messhall at 03.00 for a KP that lasted until 19.00,
most of which time was spent on my feet. Back then, basic was basic.

My youngest son is heading to BMT, (San Antonio), Air Force in August. He's going into the SERE program and I believe jump school is on the list, but not until the end of his other survival schooling after basic. That's about a year in different environments so I'll let you know what he thinks of it.

Is he air crew? He'll be going to Fairchild. I hear its pretty rough. They can slap you around pretty good.

No aircrew, he missed the depth perception questions by 1, misunderstood the instructor's question. So with his Eagle scout training he's going to be a SERE, (survival-evasion-resistance- escape), specialist. They're the guys that teach the air crew, or anyone else that will need to fly on a plane how to survive if the plane goes down. http://www.gosere.com/

I have a friend going into the Navy right out of graduating. We eamil back and forth from time to time. He's told me that his basic isn't terrible. But he was also in TBC. And incase that's just from our highschool, it stand for total body conditioning, which means you run a lot, lift weights, and do a lot of muscle building activities. So, I think it's all relevant to the person. But he may just be saying it's easy so he can keep himself positive and not look weak.[huh]
