How to wear peasant blouses 40's style?

I've got about five very beautiful hand embroidered Romanian peasant blouses from my mother who worked as a travel guide in the Eastern bloc in the 1970's, they look rather like these.

I've never worn them because I'm just not into the 70's boho hippie look, but now it's occured to me that peasant blouses were popular during the 40's too.
Actually, according to this book the fashion fad started because the National Socialist regime encouraged German women to wear traditional peasant dirdnl (sp?) dresses and wear their hair in braids (and not to think too much and have lots of babies), but then paradoxically enough Marlene Dietrich, while in US exile, unknowingly started wearing peasant blouses and that way it became a worldwide trend ... or something.

OK but my question is, how does one wear peasant blouses without looking neither like a hippie nor something out of a Wagner opera?
Suggestions are very welcome. thanks!

Peasant blouses were popular into the late 40s-early 50s as well; they are a great warm weather casual look. They pair well with a-line and fuller skirts, as well as pinafore style dresses and wide-leg pants. The idea is to keep the waist nicely fitted, like so:

I think there is a scene The Parent Trap from 1961 that has the mom wearing one. She's in the kitchen at the dads house. I couldn't find that scene on line but if you have the movie. Then I could be totally wrong.

Thanks, that's just what I had in mind. I guess the trick is to wear the blouse tucked in and not hanging loose over a pair of jeans, like Kate Hudson in 'Almost Famous' ...
Oh and I had totally forgotten 'The Parent Trap', it was my favourite movie when I was a kid. Thanks for reminding me!

Speaking of peasant blouses, the Frida Kahlo-style Mexican ones are very cute too! I just don't know how to get hold of one. Do any of you like to wear those?

There are some diffrent types of them here, a little pricey but cute... Mode Merr. I like how they are fitted on the bottom so that I don't have lumps in my skirt tucked in. I want the black one...

I have been looking on ebay for them as well but I haven't found that perfect one yet!

Hey! How funny, I just got my fitted peasant shirt from Mode Merr last night--it's adorable! It fits like a dream, the cut is great. The elastic at the arms is a *tiny* bit tight, but that's always a problem for me. I think that the folks who don't care for the high-polyester content fabric used by Stop Staring will have the same distaste for this, but I don't mind it. In fact, it's nice in that it won't wrinkle when packed, lol! At $50, I think it's a bit overpriced, but they're the only ones who offer it, and my time is so tight and my sewing skills aren't up to the level I'd like, so...I'd rather just pay up and have it done already, and right.
