How to stop a tear in the leather from spreading?

if the leather is molding rotting you can't
just to stop the tearing from spreading, punch a round hole at the end of the tear using eyelet plunger

A friend once found a 5 cm tear on the side panel of his 70s leather jacket.
He used leather glue to stick a patch on the inside, it is pretty much invisible and has been holding for a few years.

If this was my jacket i would glue a patch of leather underneath, and the stitch across all along the rip, going through both the patch and the gusset.
Make sure you use leather glue.
If worst comes to worst you can change the gusset.

The entire zipper gusset can be replaced relatively simply .... I've had these retrofitted to jackets in the past ..... cost was around £30 for the two cuffs.
