How to deal with Static Terror!

I'm in Wisconsin so this time of year the air in my flat is as dry as the Sahara. The heating plant here doesn't have a humidifying system. I run a warm mist steamer to help with being zapped whenever I touch a light switch but its reach is limited, of course.

Most of my suits are wool or wool blends and the static electricity in them would light a small town for a month. Usually I have to dowse the trousers with half a can of static spray to keep them from clinging to my legs, and must also spritz my socks and coat-linings. The spray has an unpleasant aroma and it's not cheap, either.

I'd be very interested in any tips or methods from the Loungeniks, or do I have to run steamers 24/7 in my clothes closet? :)

I agree with you Bruce, I was getting in my dads pickup the other day & gave myself such a shock it might have restarted a cardac arrested heart. Sure gave me a "jump" :)

I hate using static guard as my animals hate the smell, the pot of water on the wood stove isn't cutting it so may have to get an air moisturizer instead. Even my cats are getting shocky.

You could drag a brass chain behind you for a ground.

I know what you mean, I live in Canada and have 3 humidifiers going in my house in this cold weather. My lungs and throat are not the best, without the humidifiers I doubt I would survive the winter. The dry air is very hard on them.

At times a carpet if it has a lot of nylon in the fiber, will greatly add to static. My Husband has one jacket that is micro fiber, and the static on that will shoot a blue flame off the tips of his fingers if he wears it and touches a door knob with the lights out, you see the spark like a flame! LOL

I have had zero success with the spray for static...for us it just seems to make things gooey...but if you can hand wash anything in cold water and rinse with vinegar, and hang dry then iron, you will have gotten rid of the static. One tip also..do not hang anything with static near anything else or it will leap to the next item of clothing....been there and done that. Bummer.

Humidifiers can help....but to date static is a real pain to deal with. Someone once said a fabric softner sheet is suppose to help but if you put one of those in your pocket, it seems to smell WAY too strong...

Maybe someone else can chime in with a homemade cure for static?????

One thing to help out your lungs and throat...Nettle Tea....helps many things. Look it up...you can find on eBay but look up what all Nettle Tea can do for you...it is some good stuff.

I have some Nestle Cocoa is that close enough? Ha ha just joking. Have not tried the nettle tea, will see if they have it at the health food emporium next time I am in town.

I wear wool (and some alpaca) from head to toe, everyday. On my feet I wear wool socks with rubber painted on the bottom for a tread (although they're worn through so badly that it's essentially like being bare underfoot). I do notice that I get a lot fewer zaps now, than back when I wore mostly synthetic fabric clothing and fully-soled footwear. The only time I get shocks now is occasionally, when I stroke the cat's fur.
