How to analyse movies?

Ok, this might be a strange question, but it's very, very, very important! I have to do an analyse on the dramatic composition of "La dolce Vita", and I'm rather clueless on how to do that, and, maybe I'm doing something wrong, but I can't find anything on the net. So, any smart people in here who are willing to help? ;)

No exactly related to this question, as it is obviously some sort of legitimate assignment of work, but I find it unecessary to analyze movies. As soon as began doing that I quit enjoying them. I simply watch to be entertained. I say this as I hear too many folks getting into deep analyses of movies in a Roger Ebert way.

yes, twitcht, I also think that it's quite unecessary, and sometimes it makes you crazy if you watch a movie and can't stop searching for the plot points or whatever. But I have to do it. I wish I wouldn't :(

That Yale Film Guide is excellent - covers a great deal of ground.

For me, there are two primary considerations that reduce the need for analysis, since I prefer films that are entertainment-oriented rather than symbolic.

First, there is the ability to suspend disbelief. I don't know the person who came up with this criterion firt, but it is important - the casting, script and acting have to come together well enough that the viewer can "suspend disbelief" and believe in the characters and situation. If the film doesn't achieve this, the viewer never really gets involved.

Second is plausability. I am a big fan of westerns and a wide range of films, so I don't ask for every film to be a scriptwriting job like Patton, The Sound of Music or Lord of the Rings. But fer cryin' out loud, let's have SOME character development and a plot that justifies the actions of the characters in a plausible way. Without this, I simply cannot suspend disbelief. Too many Hollywood films today have no character development or plot, and try to substitute nekkid ladies and explosions. While I also have a passing regard for both those things, they don't make a movie hang together.

Of course, it may say something about my taste that I still find Animal House to be one of the funniest movies ever made - and it stretches the bounds of both the criteria above. But there is something to be said for a good dumb movie, and within its own parameters, the characters and situations in
Animal House pass the test.

Hehehe! I don't know if anyone is calling Animal House a classic but I liked it. Today I see way too many just f**king dumbass movies like the latest crap from Will Farrel. Just watching previews is a turn off. Every jamoke that's been on Saturday Night Live gets movies and they try so hard to be Chevy Chase or Bill Murray it's not even funny.....literally. They'd do better with me doing a recurring theme of fart jokes and sounds in a movie if they want me to laugh.
