How patient/disciplined should you be when waiting for a dream jacket to show up for sale?

I hope I’m not alone with this problem.

I know exactly what jacket I want, but it’s not the widely and commonly for sale model that show up in Classified or eBay almost weekly.

I even posted a WTB ad!

But - what I discovered is - while waiting for that dream jacket to show up for sale (2nd hand, as can’t afford brand new) - I often get distracted to some for sale jackets that closely resembles my dream jacket, but I have to ask myself really hard ‘is this really what you want?!’ ‘Will you really be happy and settle with it after you got it - or will you still want that dream jacket?’

I have to be quite detached and patient and disciplined in this search. Otherwise I think I’d end up wasting lots of money buying and reselling what is something I ultimately didn’t want.

If it's still a production jacket you can order, order it. Wait for a sale if you want.

If it's out of production, you have no choice but to wait and search. Keep searching as long as it takes, or until you lose interest.

There is no such thing as a dream jacket. Mostly we all just like buying and selling things. Hunting and gathering jackets. It’s a primal urge. It’s really got nothing to do with leather jackets.

By the way, and not to be a total dream stealer, do you know how common it is to think you know exactly which jacket you want only to get it and find out that it doesn’t suit your body frame proportions correctly. That’s why there are freewheelers Mulholland in the classified.

You’re only talking about one aspect of what would make up a dream jacket. Without owning it, you can only talk about the design and not the fit or the leather. But we want what we want, right? So keep on looking until you find it. If you’re lucky, you’ll eventually find the jacket that you want for an affordable price and will fit you perfectly. But what you’ll most likely find is that you may end up compromising on what you initially thought was a dream jacket because of fit.

The scarier part is the nightmare. When you had a dream jacket and sold it. Never to be seen again.

I have all my dream jackets. Uh…two 30s style sport jackets in leather, a wool version of that, and a Buco J100.

In my experience, buying another jacket to distract you from your dream jacket never works, you just end up with two jackets that way.
Over time I have learned that the quest for a jacket is usually more fun than actually owning the jacket, therefore be as patient as you can and enjoy the hunt.

It's only a dream jacket until it arrives. Then a new dream comes along and I ask myself why I waited so long for the other one. I think trying out different jackets until you find the (supposedly) final one is a good approach that is fun, shortens the time and possibly changes the dream.

Perhaps I should clarify what I mean the dream jacket is not the only jacket or the perfect jacket - it’s a jacket that I would instinctively reach for in the wardrobe every day and every time. It may not have wacky design but it contains the essentials on a small tick list - thick black HH, tea core and easy wearing style for all occasions. For this reason cross zip won’t be considered.

I currently operate on a 3 jackets system and will not buy /own more than 3. 1 super fitted jacket for warmer or less cool days. 1 super fitted jacket for cooler days. Plus 1 a bit baggy room cut to be more versatile for layering - preferably with a detachable mouton collar.

In a way I feel this is like buying a house - need to tick the essentials list, but can compromise on everything else. There is no perfect house, but if it ticks all the important boxes it is worth it

I understand that a cross zip motorcycle jacket is not for every occasion. But I cannot think of any occasion in which a nice Aviator (=cross zip) would be out of place. Aviators can be worn dressed up or casual and anything in between.
