I'd say that you can't take it in much more than 3 inches without the back pockets practically kissing each other ... unless you're re-taking in a waist that had been taken out beforehand.
Guys. The OP has a 40. Let's say that they were 38, let out to 40 (which would be the limit). 38 still ain't going to make it down to 34 without a re-cut. [huh]
The hip/side pockets create a problem too-
they are on the side seam, so you can't do much there.
Take too much out of the back seem(back seam only) and you start
to get a nasty twist in the legs. Legs: If you only take in one side of each leg,
you get a bad twist- trouser leg fronts and backs are different.
I've seen trousers taken in too much, with crosseyed pockets.
Not a good look and not very practical, pocket-wise.
