I now have three Vintage 125s from Brass Rooster. If you don't know what that is, they bought vintage Mallory hoods from the 50s from an undiscosed person in New York.

One of them is a true taupe with a "silver" ribbon, one is a blue a little darker than a robin's egg with a darker grey-blue ribbon, and a lavender with a sort of mauve ribbon. All ribbons are thinnish, the color more important than the width because all ribbons are of similar vintage.

I could, truly, wear these three with everything I have. That said, I also have three Beaver Brand Strat-style in light grey ("silver"), sand, and burgundy; a Borsalino in navy; a Strat inn green with the icky brown ribbon replaced with a vintage matching green; a bone beaver, and a few other odds and ends. Plenty of straws because I consider them more or less disposable when bought for less than a hundred each.

Also hats to wear in the rain, a black with a "silver" ribbon, a bluegrass green Campdraft, and a "silver belly" Campdraft.

Less often, Stetson Strats in mink, caribou, cornhill, and an Open Road in silver belly.

So, that's more than enough. Already paralyzed for choice!

I think the excitement from the hunt and searching for that next vintage felt will never subside, but pulling the trigger and buying is certainly less and less for me, personally. I even sold my only vintage Stratoliner the other day! Gave away 2 more and sold another beater a while back. I was looking to stop buying at 10 hats, but I didn’t make it to that point. I still find too much overlap in what I kept, and my wife thinks I should still trim it down to 5. It’s all a matter of personal preference, but I want to be able to wear, enjoy, and find some practicality in the ones I keep. I am very happy with my current stable and have enough styles to keep things fresh. Plus the saying you can only wear one at a time really weighed in. Let’s see if I still feel this way a year from now...

I keep looking at sacrificial lambs to sell but I have it pared down to hats I really like and am so reluctant to part with them.....even the ones I don't wear that often. I will have to pick a few to sell as I keep getting ideas for hats I want to make for myself and need to make room for them. Visited my exboss yesterday and took over the hat I am making for him for a fitting and a ribbon decision. It was great fun and I got the vicarious thrill of a new hat. Seeing his excitement at getting a new hat I got to experience, even though second hand, the thrill of a new hat.

Felts: I have one that is my 'go to' hat. and another dozen to allow for clothing differences, outside work, and seasonal options. they all stay in hat boxes when not on my head.
Straws: again, one 'go to' hat and another half dozed, mostly for outside work options.

I get the complications of having too many. I have hat boxes stacked seven high and three deep. I end up wearing just a few as it can be hard to find the hat I’m after. I also forget hats...bought duplicates more than once because I forgot I already had one. I’ve also noticed that most of my better vintage hats don’t get worn as they are irreplaceable and some are fragile. I’m slowly shifting my collection more toward custom hats over vintage. The goal is 50 felt hats and 15 “straw” hats. This doesn’t count beaters and speciality hats (rain, hunting, etc.).

7 good felts and 7 fair straws....why 7? Well 6-8 could do too! But no more than one for a different day of the week....there we are - thats why without thinking I chose 7!

10 hats total. A few if them are duplicates of my daily hats are in boxes. They're intended to replace my daily hats when they become "beaters".

The rest are worn regularly depending on my mood, activity or clothing selection.

I don't have any "I won't" as that is my 'rule'....if I don't wear it, I don't keep it......however I do have a few vintage that I tend to not wear as they are pristine and I don 't want to be the guy to damage them.....weird but there it is. I did the same with my mountain bike collection and eventually sold the 'garage queens' to someone willing to ride them and risk damage......and I felt guilty for that even.

Started with 48, then my collection blossomed. I should probably stop buying hats now lol. It's much easier to buy than to try to sell. Especially at the same price to make up the cost.
