How many hats is enough?

One advantage of being in Seattle is that it is easy to justify double the number that would normally be considered sufficient (whatever that is ...)
After all, you need backup while yesterday's hat is drying from the soaking it took in the rain.

I have about 40 hats to wear them all is quite difficult. Every day the same question which hat you're wearing today. The square is also slowly becoming less.
Nevertheless, I see a beautiful hat then I must have him.
I think I'm sick. Hat health.
Is it you, too?

My thoughts on this subject have changed over the years. I remember thinking that I would never let my hats grow past 10. Now, after paring the collection down from around 50, down to the 'essentials', I still have eight: three essentials for wearing - a Montecristi for the summer, an Open Road for rainy summer days and a Fed IV for the winter. In addition, an Oppie porkpie just because, 3 collectible hats that are wayyyy too cool to part with and I now have an 1880's GAR western on the way.

So I guess 3's company but 8 is enough.

The tip is to NOT get in the mode of telling about new acquisitions. The mode to get into is have enough hat traffic volume that new ones are hard to notice.
Between trading, selling, repairs & customizing, having hats coming & going will become so normal that new ones are not detected....
That is my story & I'm sticking to it....

At one point in my life I was addicted to collecting acoustic guitars. Since to non players, guitars look pretty much alike I found that as long as I didn't have them out of their cases in the same place at one time my wife never realized how many there actually were. I'm thinking that this tactic would probably work with hats.

My Banjo Paterson arrived today and I am blown away with the quality. It is truly exquisite. Rather than sparking a desire for more hats I feel completely satisfied with this one.

Apparently, the answer to this question is "one more than I currently have." I keep thinking I have all I need, then I spend time browsing here, or Craigslist or Ebay and find another (and another, and another) that suits my taste. I have a couple I've purchased that I should have let go by, but that's all part of the learning curve.

I have ten felts and four Tilley Hats, not to mention a dozen or so ball caps, which I wear for more athletic activities.

Of course, there's one more felt on the way.

Every time I think I'm done adding to the collection, one more pops up online, which has my name on it. :S

I have some hats I really won't ever wear. That is until I cut my hair, which happens regularly although at less frequent intervals as I age. So I keep those around because I know eventually the short-haired me will prefer them over some others. Some I keep simply because I think they're neat, and others I keep because I can't seem to sell them. Still there are others I know I won't use often, if at all, but my kids have already shown good use of them in school and/or theatrical activities.

Am I rationalizing?

I bought a bunch of hats lately. 2 barmahs, a few Tilleys, 2 akubras. There's a few more I want to buy soon. A. I am running out of storage space. B. The more hats I buy the less any particular one is valuable to me. I mean if i went to the extreme and bought hundreds I would just have a pile of hats with none I'm particularly attached to.

How many hats do guys have? Any clever storage ideas? How many hats are too many?

With all due respect, please delete this thread....
