The only limit is the lower one. You should have at least one. The upper bound on enough is unknown & not worth contemplating....

Agreed, however, the upper boundary makes for a lot of fun around here!

I've had a black statesman hat that I bought new, ten years ago. I never wore this hat until recently when I realised I didn't have enough hair on top to keep the sun off my head. As soon as I started wearing this hat, a Dobbs hat appeared on my door step, courtesy of ebaY.

So I wanted to know, how many hat are enough? Do you gentlemen have just one or two, or do you have one for each day of the week?
How many should I buy?

I would love to have a hat for every day of the week, but the only fur felt as of yet is my Akubra Federation IV, dark brown. I don't really wear my Jaxon wool C-Crown anymore, and I only wear my straw fedora, the "Ultrafino Panama Hat," on very warm days, or when at the beach. I would have to say that if you're getting into fedoras (or felt hats in general), maybe you could be content with two or three of them or quite some time. For my next consideration, I may be getting a silverbelly Campdraft or some sort of light grey, silvery/blue fedora, which may or may not be a moonstone Federation. After that, I may stop there for a while and focus more on sport coat and suit collecting, and maybe add in a real quality Panama fedora to my collection. I really like hats though, especially fur felts the most.

It`s all about quality, not quantity.

Instead of 20 hats totalling $2000, or even $1000 ($100 or $50 a hat), who would agree its better to have 4 at $500 - pristine vintage, or the very best of Custom or top Montecristi?

Nope - not me. I want something I can throw on my head and not worry about it to much, as well as some nice hats. I think it is an evolution - you get what you like and can afford, and hopelfully, what you can afford gets better, and the "nice" hats of yesteryear become the beaters of today.

I have about a dozen felt (3 vintage, 3 custom VS, 6 new OTS ranging from $100 - $400), 5 straw - and that's pretty close to where I want to be.

If you have something for every mood and situation, you are good. If you dont; - maybe you need another hat... :)

In an effort to restrict my hat buying I get one new hat a year. Maybe two (winter/summer) This means I have two hats, one good one beater for both Canadian seasons. With that said I have never thrown a hat out yet. But the stockpile is growing.

So to answer the question. Two hats one good (work and church) one beater (yard work and camping).

My present plan is to ultimately own nine hats.

1 Black dress weight fedora (now owned)
1 Grey dress weight fedora (now owned)
1 Brown dress weight fedora
1 Grey lightweight fedora
1 Blue lightweight fedora
1 Grey Homburg
1 Black Homburg
1 Silk Top Hat
1 Panama Fedora (now owned)

Whether I will ultimately fall short of that or exceed it is difficult to say. To tell the truth, I already have at least two in excess of the above (namely a different dress weight grey fedora and a replica of a very old, plush finish black fedora that Dinerman posted a few years ago)

The only thing I'm sure of is ONE is not enough. If one hat gets wet you're gonna need another to wear while it dries.

At last count I have 13 felt fedoras, a black homburg, a black bowler, four felt western hats, four straw fedoras, two straw western hats, a suede leather Stetson Indy hat and uncountable ballcaps, winter hats and other head coverings. The only head covering I don't have is hair.

I NEED several more hats. I'm good on westerns but there are still some situations where I don't have the right hat and have to compromise. The Roadmaster I wore this weekend wasn't quite the right color. I need a wide brim dark brown fedora. A gray homburg would be good.

I guess the answer is 1more!
