How many hats does one man need?
I have more than I need, that's for sure. But I'm thinking:

a good work hat in both felt & straw
a couple of casual hats in different colors...ok maybe 3 different colors
a good dress hat in black & silverbelly....ok maybe a chocolate also.

so that's 8 ...

wait...everyone needs a good camp hat...straw and felt....

so make it 10.

Ten...that's the magic number. hmmm...maybe it should be higher.

There are several existing threads on this.

I’d say fifty felt hats and 25 “straw” hats. I don’t mind having more, but I need a better way of storing them as boxes get buried and you can lose track of what you have. I know I have hats I haven’t seen in over a year. The right storage solution is required if you have a lot of hats…they don’t store easily.

Historically, I think well-hatted gentlemen probably owned a couple of dress hats, a straw hat or two, and maybe a formal hat. Previous years hats became their beaters.

My Father (I think he was my father but as I am not like him I wonder) only ever owned two hats at a time. He wore one every day and when it wore down it was relegated to beater status and he bought a new one. When he died there were two hats in his closet.....a good one and a beater for yard work.

Apparently, two more than I have today, as that is how many are on their way to me. Plus the one that I can’t decide if I need enough to justify the price, and the other one that I probably can’t let get away.

Where N is the number that you currently own.
The formula is universal (and strangely accurate) to the avid enthusiast/collector of X (where X is the item that you are collecting).
Science might be able to be proven and disproven but, "the math don't lie!"

My answer to this question is always “just one more”.
I can't recall how many times I have declared in all sincerity that my hat 'collection' is complete - done - finished .....only to be informed by a friend that a Batsakes is listed on Ebay in my size.....so then it is just one more and a further declaration. But then Brent gives me an Excellent quality Stetson and I discover an entirely new thread and I find a Stetson Excellent NY LE in my size on Ebay and.......well you get the idea of my problem........
