I just added another, I received an Akubra Federation today in the mail. Its black and I just shaped it tonight. I'm already contemplating another purchase. This is a sickness. The Federation is awesome, by the way....

Wow, I've got more hats than I thought. I think I'm at about thirteen, but I can't seem to find them all.

Those of you with lots of hats: how do you store them all? I've got mine all over the place and I'd love a nice method for storing them.

Fessing Up

I've been avoiding even opening this thread because I did not want to face the facts.

A few caveats:

I take extremely good care of all my possessions, which over time represent a priceless bank of memories, so I never throw away or sell anything that is not rotting and stinks, including hats. Accordingly, I counted even my childhood headgear that includes not only stocking caps but also an Akubra Slouch.

I have lots of ball caps. I power walk every day and, variety being the spice of life, wear a different one daily. Some are quite nice, wool or corduroy, with leather bills, so I counted them all.

After my dad died, his hats became mine. They're pristine, mostly Dobbs and Churchills, but all 7 1/4 long ovals that do not fit me. Count 'em.

Total = 62

Wait, there's a Navy-issue sailor cap up in the attic.

Total = 63

Oh yeah, the attic. There's two cowboy hats up there I played in as a kid.

Total = 65

I've got a new Riverina on the way but it has not yet arrived.

Total = 66

Oh, forgot, the rain hat I keep under the seat in my car.

Total = 67

And the one in the pocket of my all-weather coat I never wear.

Total = 68

Back to the attic, do my G.I. Joe's hats and helmets count? They were quite inspirational. They really served as a springboard for my interest in hats. I would not be the hat guy I am today without them.

Enough! I'm quitting now!

Just Fedoras?

Not counting the cowboys, sailing, fishing, formal top hats in beaver and silk, and assorted others, I think it comes to "only" six. All old.

Being a newbie here, I have a lot of catching up to do. But I'm slowly learning about what I have.

Fedora wise I have 15+ felts and 2 straw at this time. I just received a Biltmore yesterday and have a Royal Deluxe Eagle pending. Not all are pristine and some are more for kick around dress.

I have a bunch of Western hats (10 felts, 6 straws) as well. Some of the Western hats I wear when applicable (last years music performance at the Wieghorst Museum Festival), but the really big ones (tall crowns) are going to be converted. I have one being converted at this time. I wish I could do it myself.

I probably have 200 - 300 ball caps stored in the garage since I no longer wear them except when doing dirty work. Same with my cycling caps.

I'm taking notes on storage from the other thread right now.

Milestones in hat collecting: when the hats exceed the number
1. of your thumbs,
2. fingers on one hand,
3. your height in feet
4. fingers on both hands
5. fingers+toes
6. your age in years
7. your weight in kilos
8. your height in cm
9. your weight in pounds...
the really bad part comes when their number exceeds

*your height in millimeters, :eek:
*your weight in grams
*your age calculated in days*number of toes and on and on...:eek: :D

My hat collection just increased by one.
Yesterday I purchased a beautiful Rene Menard made brown fedora. Straight sided crown and bound edge.
Thanks Mr. Rover!

I now own well over 100--probably 130 or so, and need to stop adding and start selling off at least the ones that do not fit me properly.

I just bought a 7 1/2 Optimo, fished from the bay for way too much (and I wear 7 1/8)---that's how bad my disease has become. It's just that I read about a particular manufacturer or style/quality and need to see and feel for myself. I am sure many of you guys are like me.

I can honestly tell you that I am not overly impressed with Optimo. Very nice hat, yes, but it can't hold a candle to a vintage Stetson 20, 3x, 7x, Stetsonian, Whippet, Sovereign, Imperial, Dobbs 20, 50, Mallory Premier and many, many others. My Borsalinos from the '40s are the finest hats I have ever had my hands on. So, spending $650 for one of Graham Thompson's creations is simply crazy when I can have a vintage Stetson Stetsonian, Sovereign, Imperial, DeLuxe, Whippet or even an older Stratoliner, for a fraction of the price. This is just my opinion, but now that my fingers have felt--pun intended--one of Optimo's finest, albeit too large for me, I am going to stick with vintage only from now on.

Deep in thought....
Only counting fedoras (and not westerns), the hats that fit, and the hats that I would actually wear (my first fedora was a leather Indy) the total comes to 13.

3 Beaver Brand Heritage grade
3 Akubra Fed IV Heritage grade
1 Akubra Fed IV Imperial grade
1 Akubra Campdraft Heritage grade
4 Akubra Camp Draft Imperial grade
1 Stetson Open Road 4X grade

Way more than 20!! I counted 11 in the room I'm in and have a closet full at my house and my parents house (started collecting hats when I was 7 years old). I've got five in my office. Not all of them are great; not all are fedoras. Some are gifts; others are souvenirs; some I bought because I liked them. I think my favorites are my dad's U.S. Army dress blue officer hat, a fire helmet from a friend, and the Borsalino my wife bought me as an anniversary gift--I don't wear two of these, just for the record.

Another newbie to hat collecting. Since late December I've been buying new hat production as I have a pretty good hat store (Hat & Sole) in Columbus from which to buy. Being new to fedoras, I wanted to see the color and detail and handle the hats before buying. So far (all modern production):

1 Stetson Sutley
1 Stetson Temple
1 Stetson Stratoliner
1 Barsolino Panama
1 Barsolino model 160029 (my shop doesn't list them by name other than the Como). This hat is a "stout" felt, 2 3/4" brim in front, 2 1/2 on the sides with a leather band
2 Barsolino model 390090. Lightweight, waterproof felt, 2 3/4" brim, unlined with a cloth
sweat band.
I've not seen either of the model # Barsolinos on-line anywhere.

Now that I'm getting a sense of what I like, I'm looking at custom hatters. I've been studying VS, Black Sheep, Penman, Falcon Park, Tumwater, and Optimo. I'm most interested in some of Black Sheep's offerings so far.

I've appreciated all the excellent information and commentary on this site, which I read daily.
