I am down to just 48 hats after selling off 15 of the non-worn outliers. My restriction is space related and 50 is about all I can accommodate without my place looking like a hoarders. All are boxed and stacked. Half in the walk in closet I share with my wife and she has drawn the line in the sand.....I am not allowed to encroach further into her territory under threat of confiscation. The other 24 is stacked in a corner of the guest bedroom. I could accommodate more hats but only if I jettisoned some of my boot collection.....kind of a first world problem.

I've got 3-4 fedora's & pretty close to a dozen various style of newsboys.

Some of the caps are permanent dust collectors in the closet & they seemed like a good idea when I purchased them. Some of them are there because I changed my opinion on how I thought they looked on me & others because my wife hated them shortly after she saw me wearing it. LOL

Greetings All:
I tried to figure this out. I developed a plan so i wouldn’t miss any.
I put i jellybean in a jar for each hat i handled then sat the hat aside. This worked remarkably well. No double counts, no missed hats. Very orderly, i was thinking.
After i was finished moving hats back, replacing in boxes, etc i couldn’t find the jellybean jar!! Must be under a hat. Dratt

So....i got about a quart of hats, mostly white if i recall.
I think next time i’ll use pennies.
Easier to count and they are all the same color.
It’s all so confusing!!
Oh well??
Be well. Bowen
Jellybeans are known to suffer attrition with little 'angels' running around.

Well ... Uma Thurman, AC Cobras, 66 GTOs, Melanie Griffith, Raquel Welch (variety), Vincent Black Shadows, and maybe a death wish, an H2, two-stroke triple, with unbaffled expansion chambers.
Keepin it real!

I feel like Charlie Brown!
Is this Lucy's 5 cent psychiatry booth?

We should rename this thread in "how many hats do you want to own?" I've been going through all of my hats this week looking for a Knox homburg I own (yes, it was in het very last box) and came to the conclusion that it's more than a little silly to own over 300 hats and not wear a good 100 of them. Just as silly perhaps though to own 200 and wear all of them. But I still find all of them interesting and if it wasn't for the storage space needed, why not own all of those hats. Wearable or not.

Every collector (no matter what items) must be cautious at some point.
It starts as a hobby, can turn into a passion ... but once its an obsession you might be in trouble :)

I haven't counted in a long time but I have no room to securely store any more without building another room onto the house.

Let's see...If I can remember all of them....right now all my felts & wool caps are wrapped and boxed until the cool season arrives...

Felts:
4 Rand
2 O'Farrell
3 Stetson
3 Akubra
2 Miller
1 Hirt
2 Beaver Brand

1 Stetson bowler
1 Dunlap bolwer
1 vintage Top hat

Straws:
2 Sunbody 6" Gus
2 Mexican toasted Gus 4"
1 Orvis Fedora
1 Resistol Gus 4"

Other:
1 Cabelas UV protective boonie with neck cover
1 vintage pith helmet
4 Aran Donegal Tweed Gatsby wool flat caps
1 Stormy Kromer
1 Filson Double Mackinaw

Caps:
approx 20

wow. I'm surprised at how many there are!
Now, I'm gonna count my wife's shoes and boots so I won't feel so bad.

I may have come up with a new path to obsession.
Aspiring hatter!
Don't you need a bunch of cheap ones to practice on?
Don't you need a bunch of better ones to learn from?
Don't you need a lot of sizes to meet the demands of the public?
Don't you need a lot of truly great one's, IN YOUR OWN SIZE, to market all of it? (your boat is springing leaks at that point)

ASPIRING HATTER ACT V

AH: But dear, they're merchandise.

Spouse: They aren't merchandise unless you SELL them!

AH: (under his breath) Smart-ass... (out loud) I have to work on them first! Why else did I buy them?

Spouse: (long silence) You need help!

AH: (Maniacal laughter) No dear, I need HATS!
