How long does it usually take to get a reply from Goodwear Leather ?

Deposit is gone my friend.

There are too many beautiful jackets (boots too!) out there to waste your time and money ordering from these makers who don't have their shit together, can't run a business, and don't respect their customers.
I'd rather risk the lottery than try for a deal like this, non Goodwear owner haha

Right now, we're running around 12-14 months for delivery after deposit payment is received. This may seem like a very long wait, but we only have one operator making the jackets, and high quality is far more important than speed. Suppliers we have for horsehide and goatskin often take unknown amounts of time to produce what we need, so we ask for your patience. We want you to be truly satisfied

Suffice to say, deposit and order is gone!

Something went seriously sideways with his order, I am somewhat patient but I buy almost exclusively used so I could never wait a year for just about anything to be made when I eventually find it. I ordered a custom made holster that was stated a 12 week build time and the 11th week I got a shipping notice. That I can handle

John Chapman is a good man that perhaps can benefit from a good customer service representative. Our friend at LW Stuart Clurman is much better and had excellent communications with him. Both makers are on top of my list, along with forum members Dave and Reg. Personally, I value their attention to my request. I know there are members that are far more picky about details than me. For this reason, I value their patience with me.

From what I’ve read, John Chapman would refund your deposit if you ask.

I’ve had my deposit in for 15 months now. When I first sent in a deposit, I got a reply from John asking which jacket I wanted. I responded and it’s been silence since.

But for a 9 years deposit? haha that's delusional

Absolutely right on both points.
I find myself frustrated by the guys on this thread insinuating that the OP’s deposit has disappeared but I understand why that is a logical assumption after 9 years.
I am always quick to defend John Chapman and GW when it comes to questions of integrity and craftsmanship but I also understand (and have experienced) the frustration of paying a deposit and then having multiple emails and calls go unanswered.

Sorry but leaving customers hanging for years at a time while you have their money does not show much integrity. Show some consideration and set aside a day to reply to emails. Do not give dishonest representations of how long it will take to provide the item you're being paid for.

I treat random people buying $20 items on craigslist better.

I hit just over 6 years waiting and got fed up. Cancelled my order and I got my deposit back within a day. While John is amazing at making jackets, he clearly isn't very good at logistics management but he also isn't a scammer or thief.

I think a lot of orders just get lost in the pile, I'd start hitting him up regularly, I doubt the waitlist has blown out to 9 years, I think your order been missed.

The op said he's waited 9 years haha err hell no!

You seem to take that personal.

The OP asked a simple question that doesn’t require a 10+ post rant.

In life as in business things go wrong all the time. For all I know John Chapman isn’t even aware of this matter (Yes, he should, but so what.). Members in the same situation report that a refund isn’t a problem. Just speak to him.

Yeah, the situation with Good Wear is frustrating, but it's not like the Kreosote place being discussed in another thread where the guy takes payment up front and explicitly refuses to refund it no matter what.

I like how Stuart’s set things up. He has someone who is 100% focused on making the jackets and Stuart does the rest. That division of labor seems to be the right balance for him to stay on top of things.

I’ve even emailed him about jackets I haven’t ordered (and he doesn’t even produce) and usually get a response the same day.

As a one-man show, John Chapman should find his ideal balance of work as well.

Not personal just ludicrous that anyone would be so dense as to think after 9 years it's viable, end of, but yep so what, rant over, 10 plus one!
