How does a girl keep warm?

I wore an oxford type shoe today instead of boots for the first time in ages, and I thought it would be warm enough with long, thick socks under jeans. I was wrong! My feet were cold, as well as my ankles, and it was just a trip to the grocer. And it's only 40 degrees outside; it's going to get much colder. I'm thinking of dressing like a cold weather Land Girl. I'm personally, however, having trouble finding vintage or retro-look sweaters. Everything seems fancy. Maybe I need to look in the men's department... a v neck might do.

Have you popped over to the "Show us your 'dos!" thread? I just posted a picture of a model from the 40s on the cover of a vintage magazine wearing a v-neck sweater with a swell silk scarf. I have lots of v-necks and wasn't always sure that they were retro...well this lovely lady just proved they are a true vintage look. :)

I recently found a lovely vintage 1930s black wool crepe coat with a black persian lamb collar. It was just getting cold enough here to wear it the other day, but then it started to rain. Soon!!

Oh, thanks! I'll go look. I haven't seen it yet.

I am finding that I'm a lot warmer when I wear foundation garments. It makes sense - Second skins keep the heat in. Another advantage! lol
DEFINITELY! I'm actually a little amazed at how much difference foundation garments make.

In the winter I'm fond of either wool or combed cotton tights. I particularly like the ones by Foot Traffic; I usually buy 'em from Sock Dreams. They also sell a lot of over-the-knee or thigh-high woolen or thick knit stockings, so I rely on them for a lot of my winter legwear.

I have learned the art of keeping warm while wearing a skirt or dress.
-Coat wool, knee length is best. A light weight thermal jacket to line your coat for extra warmth, add thick belt to pull in your waist to keep from looking bulky. On a really cold day my friend who did not know about the extra "coat" asked me if I was warm because my coat looked thin. I had to explain about my extra layer.
-Slips full or half (color beige or nude to go with everything)
-Thermal fleece pants to wear under your dresses or skirts. I got mine in two colors grey and pink. Just make sure your skirts cover your knees and you wear long enough socks so they do not peek through.
-Socks thermal boot/ski socks, over the knee socks, and knee highs. I wear these every time I wear my boots and they keep my feet very warm. These are the kind I wear http://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B000JGM1JI/ref=mp_s_a_2?m=A3GS3CD9G1MDLS&qid=1332978712&sr=8-2
For over the knee socks these socks are super warm http://www.rocknsocks.com/socks/over-the-knee-socks.html they have good knee highs, too. Another good web site for knee highs is sock dreams. I wear these under my boot socks.
Since I wear over the knee socks I find it hard to keep these socks up so I got a pair of mens sock garters and these work great! at keeping my socks up.
-Shoes. I wear my boots out doors and bring an extra pair or shoes with me to work to change into or I'll leave a pair at work. So I don't have to wear my heavy boots all day long.
-Leg warmers. These are great to wear. You can wear them under skirts or dresses. I wear mine when I don't wear my boots and they kept my feet and legs warm. And no one said anything when I wore them with high heels. I just removed them at work and put them back on after work.
I wear these over my underwear http://www.vermontcountrystore.com/...E6D59397F802846D871B64D945D.vcs-app-02-p-app1 they are cotton tap pans and they kept me super warm paired with a slip.
-Head scarfs. Large square ones you can find these on Ebay for cheap. Plus they do not spoil your hair do. And they are a ton more warmer then hats. I have quite a few of these and its great. Its makes it look like I have more than one outfit.
-Camisole to wear under dresses and blouses (Colors beige or nude) for extra warmth.
-Skirts wool
-Sweaters wool
-Cardigans

Thanks Stray Cat for bumping this thread. I'm getting ready to move from Southern California to Kansas in January and I've recently started wearing a lot of skirts again so I want to look and feel classy without freezing to death in the snow. This info is all wonderful!

After reading all of this, I can only imagine you looking like Randy from the movie A Christmas Story when you brave the cold outside. ;)

I find that 1930s coat combined with merino wool undergarments can keep me quite warm and cozy.
A large thick knit beret and some knit gloves.
For shoes/boots I usually wear Norwegian "labber", or Nesnalobben is the name to look for, we just call them labber or lobber:

One of my 30s coats, knit beret and knit gloves in traditional Norwegian pattern:

That is so funny.
One day it was so cold out my co-worker was very worried I was going to freeze to death walking out in the snow and cold wearing a cotton dress. I had to explain and reasure her I would be fine walking out in the freezing cold weather wearing my "thin" dress and "thin" coat since I had extra layers that did not add bulk. She had no idea how many layers I had on to keep me warm as a bunny. When I told her she turned red. :)

Great winter outfit Miss Slapstick. I wish more shops sold mittens, they are the hardest gloves to find.

I'm always on the look out for some good strong winter boots since I walk around a lot and walking through thick piles of snow put a lot for ware and tare on my boots plus I have flat feet and its a pain finding a good vintage style boot with arch support.

I should start wearing my fur collars more often but scared someone will want to attack my fur. Since I live in a very urban part of the city.
