Childrens' author and 19c. historic lifestyle enthusiast Tasha Tudor made herself wool petticoats to wear under her long dresses in the winter. She never wore pants, ever- even in the dead of winter.

Her barn was also attached to her house (I believe her son built her home, and it was very authentic). Smart woman, keep the animals closer so you don't have to go outside in Vermont winters! I love Tasha Tudor, really an inspiration for living a different lifestyle than the rest of the world, and being happy while doing it.

Aww, Tasha Tudor! Her farm is just a little ways from where I grew up, as a matter of fact-- this settles it, I shall have to finally invest in some woolen and flannel slips. Vermont winters are the absolute worst.

Until I absolutely must put on some wool stockings, I have purchased some plain ol' modern, seamless nude stockings to layer underneath my fully-fashioneds. A pair or two of those really goes a long way to keeping your legs warm without having to give up your pretty seamed stockings.

Thanks RodeoRose! What a good idea. I had thought of wearing tights or leggings under my 40's jeans (also the olny way you'll get me to wear leggings these days) but not layering tights themselves. Which is actually what I used to do when I was younger. Though with much MUCH brighter colours.

Hi ladies,

I don't want to mess around with Old Man Winter this year. Last year, even in -35 weather, I still wore my dresses and skirts. I have no pants; they all look horrid on me. :(

I have a couple of pairs of wool stockings and those are ok in cold weather, but not freezing weather. I'm thinking of getting more of those fleecy tights! http://www.shopbop.com/fleece-lined-tights-plush/vp/v=1/845524441859764.htm?folderID=2534374302072037&colorId=12867&extid=affprg

I'm on the Winter boot hunt already. Not much luck so far.

My winter plans, which I probably ought to get started on :) , include finding some nice fur-lined boots, a fur scarf or small capelet, wool stockings and getting my wool coat taken in. I love the coat, it's long and grey and looks fantastic with my big snowflake pin on the lapel, but I suspect it's actually a mens coat. It doesn't come in at the waist at all and is rather large and boxily cut.

I'm also still in search of a warm hat that doesn't wreck my hair...three winters now!! Last year, I ended up wearing a wooly scarf babushka-style, which worked nicely, but wasn't very cute. I'm thinking about making some flannel "bloomers" for underneath my skirts, but I've got to find a silky slip to keep the flannels and skirts from sticking and riding. Has this worked for anyone?

I like all the tips that are here! As for layering tights: when it gets unbearably cold I skip the stockings and wear wool tights with knee-high or over-the-knee stockings with wool socks over them. Makes for a warm combination under a fuller skirt, what with the wind blowing up one's legs!

For years I've been meaning to get a onesie, but for now layering slips works well.

So now that we've discussed how to keep warm when we're out and about - how do you keep from over heating once you're at your destination?

Good point! I hate it when I am all layered up warm and then have to go into hot buildings. Especially when shopping because it's not like you can take your coat/layers off when you get there. What to do?!

I find that taking off my scarf and carrying it; removing my gloves and stuffing them in my pocket; and loosening my coat collar help tremendously. If I have to be in the building for long enough to necessitate taking off my coat, I remove my scarf, hat, and gloves, stuff them in my coat sleeves, and carry the coat over my arm.

Got it in one C-dot! I do the same, i have a large-ish handbag, (the Mary Poppins bag as my son calls it), which will easily contain hat, scarf, gloves and all my other lady junk quite nicely. Then i carry my coat or jacket on my arm. I also tend to wear cardigans a lot, if i don't want to remove my coat, i usually slip off my cardi and put it in my bag and wear just my blouse and coat.

I recently found the old knit wool thigh high stockings at an antique center. They are superbly warm, I also have found vintage thermal bloomers and a couple thermal knit tank tops online. My mother is sewing me up some thermal slips and blomers also. I only wear dresses so I really have to bundle up. I also wear super long leg warmers under my dresses. I walk over a mile to work at 6am every morning, brr. Boots I gave in and got a pair from llbean, I take those off at work and put on my cute shoes, I may also give in to an ankle length down coat just so I can survive this year.

Its already starting the fall season being very cold here in No. Calif. For staying warm, I very recently found at an antique fair in Placerville, a 1930s black wool crepe full length coat with a black persian lamb collar in perfect condition. It will fit both my daughter and myself. Bought it for the daughter as she needed a good cold weather coat, as I am tired of seeing her in a modern poly blend-not wool short coat worn with jeans-seems like that's all you can find out here for the young-uns'.

Ah, yes! Cardis are fantastic for that! :)

Although it's pretty mild for the time of year here in Wales, I've been desperate for a new winter coat for a few years now so I treated myself to this beauty from Topshop:

http://www.topshop.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?beginIndex=0&viewAllFlag=&catalogId=33057&storeId=12556&productId=2246642&langId=-1&sort_field=Relevance&categoryId=391052&parent_categoryId=203984&pageSize=20#13210185663201&country:undefined^language:undefined^currencySymbol:undefined^preferredUrl:undefined^viewed:true^explicit:false

I've been looking for something just like this for ages now so snapped it up when I found it.

Back on topic - ironically, I'm always boiling hot so don't really need to make much effort to keep warm. My husband calls me his little radiator.

Funny, my man calls me "his body temperature vampire", because that´s what I day from November till April. I can´t produce enough warmth on my own somehow, so I have to robb his :D
Btw, the link doesn´t work, not even with c&p. Maybe you can copy the image url instead of the link?

Oh! I knew it looked funny! Hopefully this'll work, I'm at work at the moment so can't use Photo Bucket.

Now it's getting colder, my fella asks me to warm his side up for him before he gets in which just involves me lying there reading while he faffs around.

I love that fur collar! Now that it's getting chilly in my neck of the woods, I'd love to stop procrastinating and finally sit down one weekend and make myself one to go with my peacoat my husband bought for my birthday a few years ago.

My husband is the same way about warming up the bed...he doesn't like my cold feet but in the morning he tells me he needs a fan blowing on him even in the dead cold because I'm like his little furnace. ;)

That collar is so-ooo soft!

Isn't it funny that us girls seem to be the hot ones and our men are always chilly?

Oh, I can only imagine...seriously I'm drooling over here. I'm thinking I might coax the husband into taking me fabric shopping this weekend. ;)

As the old saying goes, "is it hot in here or is it just me?" ;) I do remember my dad always jacking up the thermostat in the winter...and my mom turning it down again. A never ending battle!

I wore an oxford type shoe today instead of boots for the first time in ages, and I thought it would be warm enough with long, thick socks under jeans. I was wrong! My feet were cold, as well as my ankles, and it was just a trip to the grocer. And it's only 40 degrees outside; it's going to get much colder. I'm thinking of dressing like a cold weather Land Girl. I'm personally, however, having trouble finding vintage or retro-look sweaters. Everything seems fancy. Maybe I need to look in the men's department... a v neck might do.

I have plenty of coats, and if I wear a skirt or dress I wear leggings under it and usually thigh high socks from Rockin' Socks because they're so comfy and they stay up. My Sock Dreams thigh highs always fall down.

Living in Portland I'm finding that hair styling isn't really an option in the fall or winter... so much rain here, any time now. I've taken to keeping it really simple, even when I really want to put rolls in or such. Which I have practically stopped doing because of the weather.
