...I used to love Chock Full o'Nuts, but after they were bought out by Sara Lee the coffee tastes different to me, and I have aesthetic objections to a coffee can that now has a shrink-wrapped plastic label, instead of the label being being properly printed on the metal like it used to be.

I guess I'm a early riser, I have my black coffee at 6:15 am. I like an Italian roast or Kenyan which I grind just before I add hot water off the boil. I make this in a small stainless steel jug and then strain it into my cup.

No, you're not. I, for instance, really like it from time to time. It's excellent with more warm milk than water. And there are lots of differences between brands and types.

OK, a but of hypocrisy, given the rant I just made on the Hat Board, mildly criticizing folks for blasting wool-fedora wearers and railing/encouraging people to follow their own subjective personal tastes.

The progression I followed as I grew in coffee....my parents always drank drip, then switched to instant when my mother could no longer tolerate caffeine (heart palpitations). Back to CDM coffee when I became a serious drinker....then the other New Orleans brands....French Market, Community (technically Baton Rouge,) Luzianne and Union.

Then espressos, both machine made and with a moka pot and packaged espressos.....Cafe La Llave, Cafe Bustelo, Lavazza

NOW, it's home roasted coffee, usually in a French press. This morning it was Sulawesi (varietal) Toraja (plantation name) as I just got in a shipment of green beans on Friday....I'd been without for two weeks. :rage: I prefer my coffee fairly dark, so it's a fine line between strong flavored, dark roast and ruined (Starbucks I tend to dance right on the line.

Oh, in the press it's SIX heaping teaspoons. I may try three, as someone else does, that would save me some $$$$ if I could use less coffee.

I take it black.

When I was a young man right out of college, I was in radio advertising sales. I found that one of the few ways I could get the full attention of a store owner was to invite him out for coffee. At that time, I used sugar in my coffee.

I quickly found that I was drinking so much coffee I was going to gain a lot of weight from the sugar - so I just quit using it. Took me about two weeks to get completely used to drinking it black. I've always liked it black and strong - my reaction to impy coffee is to want to spit it out.

We have a Capressobar 351 coffee machine I picked up on Ebay a while back. It makes coffee and expresso - one unit with two sides and functions. We don't make espresso or lattes often, but it sure comes in handy when we want 'em. I don't think they make this unit anymore, but it works decently for us.

We grind the beans in the store, and keep them in a well-sealing ceramic container on the counter.

Over the past few years, I've started buying coffee at the store by mixing caf and decaf beans half and half, then grinding it all together. Caffeine doesn't keep me up unless I drink it late in the evening, but if I really load up on it for a few days, my heart will skip an occasional beat. This is not serious, but not to be encouraged either!

I sometimes make a PSG blend. Our local supermarket has loose Green Mountain Coffee beans in dispensers. I mix and match beans for unique coffee never to be replicated.

This reminds me, the "to go" coffee cups at Eli's Vinegar Factory (Eli of Zabar's) say "Some people think coffee is a matter of life and death. I know it's more important than that." Or something similar.

If you're not roasting your own, the next freshest thing you can do is to grind your beans immediately before you brew your coffee. Invest in a decent burr grinder and grind it then. This keeps the coffee from getting stale on you, especially as you work your way down to the bottom of the bag, where the beans were ground days or even weeks before, depending upon how much or little you drink.

Some years ago Nescafe' made a big pitch for their three varieties of instant coffees. One being Mountain Blend, the other two I've forgotten. The plan was to treat us with three different blends and flavors. Like so many well laid plans, that devolved into just one Taster's Choice/Mountain Blend concoction that is on the shelves today. I'm told the Mexican Import Nescafe' has a fuller body, robust aroma, and bolder taste although it is priced higher. Now we're talkin' gourmet instant coffee; what could possibly be next!!!??? -dixon cannon

When in Turkey I would drink the little tea-cup sized cups of Turkish Coffee...Kept me up for almost 24 hours so I wouldn't do it too often.

While stationed in Alaska I got spoiled...Ty at Captain's Coffee would actually roast it right in front of me!!! He got his beans straight from his Brother-in-law that was in Guatemala.

I take instant coffee along while travelling (so as not to spend $2/cup a couple of times a day) and the Mexican Nescafe is light-years better than other instants (certainly better than the "Medaglia d'Oro" $8-for-2-oz instant 'espresso.') Have you checked a Hispanic market; the Mex. Nescafe is usually cheaper there than at regular supermarkets.

(Even better is to dissolve the instant coffee in some hot milk, no water. Yum!)
