How do you style your hair? How do people react?

I rarely post on these forums (I actually think this may be my first time), but I've been reading for a long time so I thought I'd start my first post.

I come from a Spanish background, born in Texas and a current college student. Like many of you I've always been fascinated with things of the past. The way men dressed, how pretty women looked, the cars, music, films, etc.

So just a quick question, for men and women, how do you style your hair? What is your favorite product to use? How do people react when they see you?

Personally I LOVE Murray's. I had used Murray's Superior for a long time but now recently switched to Murray's Classic, it still has a great shine and hold but its easier to wash out. Badly want to try Black & White. I've tried Royal Crown and several others but they just don't do it for me. I used Layrite as well but it seemed to feel gel like and I didn't like how it hardened.

As far as styling I just go for the classic side part, Clark Gable-esque.

Kent is my preferred comb to use.

The reactions people give me are awesome, women seriously love it on campus and at work! Since its something so different I guess for younger men to comb their hair, and of course the nice shine that comes with it. You'll definitely stand out apart from other people!

By the way for any men who are ever in the Dallas area be sure to visit Robs Chop Shop, that guy will give you a great cut! I live too far to drive there but I would if I could.

I style my hair in a kind of long flat top, and comb it over 1940's style, kinda like this:

People always seem to think that haircut looks good on me. Well, I've never gotten a bad comment on my hair yet, at least.

I've grown mine out long, and never brush or comb it anymore. Just all straight back with my fingers. A little pomade to tame it and I'm good.

Normally a 'short back and sides' with a side parting and lashings of Black and White or Dax.

But I may have to try another style as that seems to have become a 'trendy' haircut in the UK now!

That's funny. I'm in the camp of I still have hair but I buzz cut it very short. I don't enjoy or care for flowing locks or hair maintenance (product) when you can just have it "gone" and be happy.

Yep. My first thought was, "Hair? What hair?" Mine's cut as short as the clippers will cut it, and I usually cut it once per week.
I haven't quite gotten to the stage of shaving it yet.

I do an undercut, but with a 3 on the side which makes it not a true undercut and I blow-dry/comb it up and back sort of like a brush up/ faux pomp thing. It's a bit boy band-esque, but I've actually been doing a similar hair style for years. When I'm older, I'll probably go for a more traditional pomp or that 40's flat top/side part that Bushman posted ( I LOVE that hair style as well).

I use Kent combs, but usually end up finishing the styling with my fingers rather than the comb. I also use a variety of pomades.

For water-based, my favorites are: 1. Admiral Firm Hold 2. The Damon Barber #1 3. Baxter of California Hard Clay Pomade 4. Type 550 Extra Firm

However, I actually prefer the texture, feel, and luster that oil based pomades give. My favorites for these are: 1. Tie between Lockart's Heavy and O'Doud's Heavy 2. The Iron Society Firm Hold.

As far as reactions: My fiance loves it so that's all that really matters. I do get compliments on it as well as weird looks sometimes. When it gets longer I'll get little kids staring at it even though I don't think it is all that tall haha!

I'm a lot older than you guys and my hair is gray, nearly white. It started to turn gray when I was 26. I get a standard short back and sides, wash every 2 or 3 days with shampoo, use conditioner, and VO5 for gray hair, which contains bluing. This keeps my hair looking white or gray with no yellow. Just a dab half the size of a pea. I have gotten compliments on my hair, mainly because I have a full head of it and also the color.

I think white/grey hair can certainly look good on guys depending on how they pull it off. I think your strategy of keeping it short and simple is quite smart!

Long hair is not a good look for an old man. As for men with pony tails, well if you want to look like a horse's ass that is your privilege. Pony tails are for 14 year old girls.

Balding men with long hair, that is the worst. Or maybe a photo finish with the bad comb over.

Personally, I find long hair doesn't look great on Golden Era hats in the first place. I had about earlobe length hair when I started wearing hats, and I tried on a dark brown Eddy, and tried hard not to laugh at my reflection as I looked at myself and saw Hugh Jackman's iteration of Van Helsing in the mirror. :eusa_doh: I went out and got a 40's style haircut as soon as I could, and I've kept with that ever since.

Had to look up Gary Oldman, he is not old in the pictures I found, his hair is not gray or white. The others all look better in short hair. In long hair they look like bums.

In the newest pics of Oldman he is to the age where he will keep his hair short if he is smart.

There are different definitions of short, I mean not touching the collar or hiding the ears.

On further thought I might make an exception for long hair with a beard on an old man. Like Santa or Walt Whitman. Willie Nelson still looks like a bum.

I use baby oil to keep my hair in place.

The view that older men shouldn't have long hair is rather limiting and probably says more about random personal biases than anything else. I think Mr Nelson looks great with long hair. I think variety should be celebrated and we shouldn't set limits as to what looks "correct".

Here's an old man with long hair I've always been fond of.
