Ummm, a scarf or earmuffs.

Some news boy styled flat panel caps had fur or fleece lined flaps that would fold down when in need. Also the popular hunting caps had these flaps.

But, earmuffs were around back in those days and a big heavy thick knit scarf worked quite well.

180s have always been my go-to for cold weather. I've got the regular ones that are covered in fleece material, but my dad has a pair of these extra-slim ones:

He says they don't muffle noise nearly as much, and assures me that they're shockingly warm, despite their small stature. I expect this kind would work even better with fedoras and the like than the regular 180s.

I have had a couple of the rabbit fur hats like those, but I finally bought one off of ebay four or five years back that is shearling, they had many different colors to choose from, and I chose the dark brown. I gave the rabbit fur ones all away and wear this one when I am going to be out side in the worst of the weather, and do not want to wear a felt hat.

What I did not like about the rabbit fur hats was after a while they made my head itch and then the fur started to come loose, the only complaint I have had about my shearling hat is the front bill on the hat I chose does not fold down. but looking at what they make now they have one that does.
this is a very warm hat, it does not seem to be overly hot though like the fur hats were.
just my two cents worth.
I will get a couple of pictures tomorrow, as my hat is in my pickup in my cold weather bag.

Very true about the wild hat taking off and spooking a heard, I never have had that trouble with any felt stetson, even with a nylon on my mellon, but on the Kansas Nebraska Colorado lines it is always windy and my hat was pulled down tight, but in the summer time I always had more trouble keeping a straw hat on until it was worn for a month or two and really fitting good, other wise it was always wanting to take off like a kite.
ahh the good ole days...(I say that sitting here in front of a computer all comfortable and warm)
My Dad still wears a silk nekerchief he pulls up over his face and ears when the weather gets real miserable.

Only problem with wearing a piece of hosiery on your head (besides your friends catching you) is that most of the pantyhose type stuff is fairly slippery, and will help your hat fly off if the wind starts up. Spending many hours driving cattle, herding horses and taking city slickers on horseback tours of our local canyons, I've tried most everything. I always end up coming back to the old bandana standby. Nothing will scare a bunch of horses like a hat blown off a rider in front of them. Interestingly enough, I know several old cowboys who will wear pantyhose under their jeans when it's cold, or when they know they will be in the saddle all day. Says it keeps their jeans from giving them saddle sores! Frank

I haven't had any probs with this one and this will be it's 4th winter...

I find the really nice thing about the rabbit is the length of the fur makes it plug up any and all potential leaks.
If you decide you want one and can't get it there I could get it and ship it to you through ebay I would think.

how well do they work?

I find them to work very well for me. One could think that the buckle would be unpleasant, but that is not my experience. The big advantage of the Hat Flap is that it also cover your neck, great in chilly winds.

in the movie fargo, i was sure in one police scene, saw a cop wearing a fedora and he had flags on it, but this was a really cold state. 59lark.

The hat you describe in Fargo, is worn by the character Jerry Lundegaard, played by William H. Macy. It is a wool trilby/Tyrolean with a stingy brim, a tapered crown and very comfy-looking ear flaps.

I'm glad you brought it up. I've always been curious about Jerry's hat. It looks like a good way to stay very warm, and yet remain a bit "dressy" here in the bitter cold winters. A bit of steam and it could be worked into a shape with a bit more "class" than Jerry's lid.

Anyone know of a source for this hat?

I have a several hats that I wear when I need to keep ears warm. The first is known at our house as the Comrade Husband Hat.

I don't have a picture of me in the second one, but it's a Cabela's, umm, more of a cowboy hat than a fedora, really. It's a lot like the one here: http://www.cabelas.com/cabelas/en/t...parentType=index&indexId=cat601378&hasJS=true , but it has a different band.

Lastly, I have an old, beat up, camouflage ballcap, made with Gore-Tex & Thinsulate, with ear flaps. Again, no pictures of me wearing it, but it's my duck hunting hat.
