How do you feel about(Vintage) fur?

I like the aesthetic of vintage fur, but prefer fake fur because it doesn't shed and you don't need to care for it in the same way as you do a real vintage fur. While not necessarily matching my exact aesthetic because of the time period, I'm a big fan of orlon fiber

I have a matching pillbox hat and scarf in a black and white fur, I'm not sure what animal it is, that I wear with my winter coats. I thought for a long time about whether I was comfortable with wearing fur, because little touches of fur trimmings are so emblematic of the midcentury winter aesthetic, and while there's really good looking faux fur being produced now, that's a relatively recent development and tends to have a more contemporary style. (Plus new things in general are usually out of my budget!) The conclusion I came to was that I think it's more respectful and honoring of the animal for someone who appreciates these accessories to take good care of them and get real use out of them as long as possible, than for the items to be discarded and possibly end up in a landfill.

I like fur as long as the animal's head isn't attached to it. The '30s winter fur coats are so pretty; I'd love to have one.
My wife born and raised in Northern Alberta where having a fur coat was almost a necessity back in the day before technical fabric owned two beautiful fur coats but here on the Left Coast one no longer wears fur in public for fear of having paint thrown at you. She has a Tshirt from her childhood that stated on the front ..."I survived 30 days of minus 40"

As a kid in the early 1950's my aunt would visit with her fox or mink stoll with the heads still attached.....I thought that was the coolest thing ever. All the guest coats would be piled in the master bedroom and I would sneak in just to visit the dead animal attached to her coat.

I do own one vintage coat with a fur collar. I don’t know what type of fur it is, I do believe it is real.

The coat looks 60s to me so I imagine it had a matching muff or hat.

I haven’t worn it once, but I just had to have it in the moment because it was “a status symbol” to have one back then. Use to joke with hubs about when he was going to get me a fur, LOL.

I wouldn’t buy a new fur coat but would buy a vintage one. I don’t know if I’d wear it though.

I don't mind vintage fur myself. I have a few furs in my closet (which are slowly falling apart due to age and wear). I don't support modern furs, but more because I can't afford it, don't like the silhouettes, and for the most part can find vtg furs thrifting, estate saling, or antique shopping. I do wear them, because quite frankly, they are warm. Plus the critter would have been long gone by now regardless.

I also have a small collection of various animal parts and skulls. No taxidermy yet, but I feel if I can have these oddities I can wear fur.

Now of course, I realize this isn't for everyone -- either due to the "creepy" factor or a moral factor, so I never try to argue my reasons with anyone or try to convince them it's ok. It's a very personal decision. I just say, if you are ok with it, but worried about judgment, like everything, wear it with confidence and do you. If you are not, I suggest that the folks with moral superiority to go out and buy up all the furs they come across and donate them to animal shelters who can use them for bedding.

I know this conversation can go deeper, but I just wanted to add to the conversation and mention that I, persoanlly, am ok with furs, whether functionable or fashionable.

My wife has a few fur coats. Two of her own purchased many years ago when growing up in Northern Alberta a fur was a necessity in order to survive winter. The other inherited from her mother. She does not wear them. One we live in a temperate climate but secondly if one wears a fur in our hippy dippy west coast culture you run the risk of having paint thrown at you or at the least spit on. So on those few very cold days she wears her Shearling coat.

That is too bad. In my opinion, throwing paint or spitting does nothing but disrespect the animal they are trying to champion. I understand why they think it is a good idea to do it - destroy it so they can't wear it -- but all that does is make it so that jacket will be replaced. Continuing the demand for the fur industry.

I only wear my furs for about 2 months in the year when it gets cold enough. However I haven't gone out like I used, so these past 2 winters haven't seen the furs come out.

Yes, the past 2 years we have been staying home more often than not regardless of the weather.

I like fur coats for women I think they look attractive. My wife doesn’t think so though so she doesn’t have any. I think she believes it’ s an outdated look.
