How do I use this pin curl tool?

I found this at a little vintage shop all it said was hair rollers. It came in 2's not very big with a slice in the metal. So my question is how do you use this? Is it a heat activated tool or simply made to help with pin curls?

I have one of these, its my pincurl secret weapon. I tend to use it on dry hair as on wet hair it makes ridiculous frizz on me.

I think you put a small section of hair through the slot, pull it to near the end of your hair ( so just the ends are sticking thru the slot), then twirl it to wrap your hair around it all the way to the scalp. Then you just slide the hair off the curler and your pincurl is ready to be clipped to your scalp.
