How do I know if I look good in a hat?

The cliched answer is that, if you can wear the hat, instead of the hat wearing you, then generally it produces a pleasant effect. When you wear a hat with confidence, it shows. Other people can tell you're comfortable, so they see the hat as an extension of you as opposed to an object sitting on your head. A big part of it is confidence. That's not to say you can pull of any style, but feeling good in a hat is half the battle. The same thing that avedwards said.

I couldn't agree more. If you feel confident and comfortable, you're going to look good in a hat.Just keep in mind the general hat configurations for face type, but be yourself. Additionally, the more you wear your hats the more comfortable you'll become.

I'm a big believer that people see what we project. I'm not sure that any hat is necessarily off limits to any given individual. Most of us could pull off most any hat, provided we had the confidence to try. We sometimes run into our own preconceived notions of how we SHOULD look, and our own opinion is what we project. Most everyone feels pretty good wearing something one along the lines of an Open Road, so you might look at something like that and then in time, get more adventurous. It's all about what you want to project. EVERYONE looks good in a hat!

Lots of great advice! I'll have to study these to absorb it all. A couple of things. You have to remember that this is San Diego, where -- despite the constant sunshine -- any hat other than a ballcap looks out of place, almost "pretentious," even my Tilleys. Also, I haven't discovered a place here to try on "medium" crowns, short crowns, wide brims, narrow brims, etc. Not much to choose from. I plan to order online, but it's much easier to have the hands-on experience to help make the decision. Can't get that here. Maybe a trip to L.A.? Also, I'll take your advice and post some photos of my noggin, when I overcome my embarrassment. You guys are great. And I like the idea of the parrot.

I lived in San Diego for six years and I know what you mean about ballcaps, they're pervasive. I would bet that if you were to wear a fedora out, down in the Gaslamp area, you'd get great compliments.

As far as hat shops go, there is one in Hillcrest, I believe on 4th. I didn't like the shop, or the service, but it's a place to go and look at different hats.

Metropd lives in San Diego and wears a suit and a fedora most days (top hat and tails on special occasions I believe). He once told me people often go out of their way to give him compliments.

I have not been wearing fedora styles but for about 4 years now, I worried about how I might look and being from the deep south, and living in E Texas stuck with western styles.

I started with the smaller(than western) fedora's, was a little self conscious at first, then it became the norm and I do not leave the house without one. My wife likes it because in a large store she can spot me from a distance because of the hat style.

At my age I am going retro on a lot of things, hats, fountain pens, razors( using a 1912 Gem) and, guns, preferring double barrel sxs shotguns and single shot rifles ,
