How do folks react to your hat wearing?

Going in to the doc's office yesterday as a couple was coming out. Big guy with a cane, real nice western boots and a large brim, sure-to-be-Joao-approved western hat with a Cattleman crease, and his wife. She took one look at me, turned to face me and said "You look like a guitar player, you know, with the beard and hat and everything!" I replied, "saxophone," and the guy said "perfect!" I told him I was checking out his hat and he's lookin' pretty sharp with the hat, boots and all. Fun.

So today I was walking down Lexington Avenue in the rain towards my office(after a 1 and a half hour trip from Brooklyn, about 15 miles) and a nattily dressed gent said to me, "that's a great looking hat", referring to my BGG campdraft. I thanked him, and he pointed to his baseball cap and said"this is bull, just wearing it in the rain. I'm a hat man myself". I do notice more fedoras in NY these days, maybe because I look for them.

Interestng reaction -or non-reaction - I got during my trip to the barbershop. Neither positive nor negative, just a couple of looks. I guess I'll take it. At least no one threw rocks at me, right? (I wonder if was because I ended up wearing my Cavanaugh Edge instead of the Dobbs???)

Absolutely due to the Cavanagh edge, Mike! The Cav is known for having soothing effects... Always a great look; GOOD choice!!

This shirt gets a lot more comments than the hat. Best comment was: "You even have a shirt that wears a hat."
I've nothing against the sombrero, but I wouldn't wear one. Young Brit guys go to Spain for a couple of weeks of sun & sangria and come back wearing some sort of pastiche of a sombrero.

That is a nice shirt. After thirty years living in Hawaii, I have a fair collection of Aloha shirts myself. They don't get much wear now that I am in Alaska though.

I recently passed a milestone. At 67, they let me put "Grey" for hair color on my new drivers licence.
Several years ago I had one of those sobering experiences. It was a pistol purchase permit and the young admin assistant at the Sherrif's office entered Grey for my hair color. My hair was always dark brown/black for my entire life and despite the fact that I had been greying since my latter thirtys, I was like"damn, I'm grey now?" Now I'm just happy to still have my own hair.

For several weeks now (8? 10? 12?), a young man at church has commented on my hats by saying, "Brother, I LOVE your hat!" It started with the 50's taupe Royal Stetson, which got 3 raves in one day, and has continued every week since. Three times I took my hat off to see how it fit on his head. Twice with customs and once with a ~ 70-80's modern Stetson Downs. My daughter saw me put the Downs on his head and told me later, that actually looked really good on him.... and it fit well, too @ size 7-3/8 (which is usually a little tight for me).

So Wednesday I took the info I learned here on the FL and poured distilled water all over the hatband/ribbon to get it thoroughly soaked. It had water stains on the ribbon and I didn't want to gift a hat looking like that. I also "scrubbed" the water into the ribbon with a new toothbrush (don't tell MrsFed!) to get it really soaked. When the hat ribbon, and surrounding felt, had dried the stains were completely gone. I brushed the hat out and I'll be dogged if it didn't look REALLY good. I went to the garage and pulled out a Stetson box I had wrapped up in a plastic trash bag and put it all together.

Now, some might think I did this because the young man took my daughter to the prom and showed her respect AND a real nice time, but that would be wrong. It's that he showed such an abiding interest in something I enjoy so much: hats.

As luck would have it, we parked two spaces away from his father's car when we went to church this morning. I had no idea it was his Dad's car until I saw "Daniel" step out of the far side. He looked over at me and said hello, and again said he loved my hat (a VS Silverbelly/Burgundy sweetie I really dig) and I said the usual thanks, and then... "By the way, I have something for you."

You should have seen his eyes grow as big as ping pong balls! I went to the trunk and pulled out that white trash bag and took it over to him. He opened it up and kept saying, "are you SERIOUS???? Wow! Really? Wow!" By then his Dad had walked over and Daniel pulled out the little black Stetson Downs. Now both Dad and Son were smiling as big as the new moon. They both thanked me, and I just said, "you know, congrats on your graduation and everything. I know how much you like hats so I wanted you to have one for your own." Hand shakes from Daniel and his Dad, and then we went into church. Danny said, as we turned to go, I am soooooooooooooooo wearing this everywhere!

My daughter texted me twice to tell me how much Daniel loves his hat. I have to say, as much as Daniel loves his hat, I'm the one that got the most joy out of this transaction. I wish we had pics, but no. Here are pics of me wearing the hat last year, and a pic of Danny and LilFed on their way to the prom.

Oh, I got rid of the feather. The hat looks so much dressier without that feather!
