As we were walking in to my daughter's play this afternoon, I picked up the Champ MrsFed had, told her she needed some snap in her brim, then put a couple pinches in the hat and plopped it on her head. As we turned for the entrance doors I looked up to see a guy from the production team giving us a huge smile, then followed with a friendly "hello guys!"

I knew he got a kick out of us and our hats. Fun abounds...

I exchanged my Jaxon Bolwer for my Reed Hill "stingy brim" Derby and walked downtown. I began getting compliments as I went and chatted with friends at the local motion picture theater. It is nice to be "distinguished and different" from other men on the street.

There's something about a man with a nice hat that sets him apart from the rest of the hoi and poloi.

We had some other people comment on our hats last weekend, too. We went out to eat and our waitress asked why I was so dressed up, and said she really liked our hats.

At church, more and more people are saying something about my hats. The young man who took my daughter to prom had told Lil'Fed that he liked my hats. Now he's taken to telling me every Sunday, "I LOVE that hat!" Last Sunday I was wearing the Falcon Park silverbelly with steely blue ribbon. It's a bit tight on me, a true 7-3/8 LO, as I run 23-3/8" (right between size 7-3/8 and 7-1/2). I told "Josh," let me see something, and I put the hat on his head. He looks like a perfect size 7-3/8 (59cm). I almost left it on his head, but took it back. My thinking is, he's headed out for missionary service in about a year and when I find out where he's going I'll gift him something appropriate for his part of the world.

Another guy at church, about 30 I'd say, said something about me rockin' with style this past Sunday, too. Same Falcon Park silverbelly hat with a suit and tie. I said, you look great, too, but he replied, but not like you, man!

I don't know about you but the most envious looks that I get happen when it's raining. People are feeling uncomfortable with their hoods or struggling with their umbrellas and I'm like shining around them with my water proof felt hat. It's as if i could read their thought : "oh this guy had a wonderful idea for rainy days !"

People in this part of southern California are usually so involved in whatever they're doing that they don't care about, or bother to look at, what other people are doing. But every once in a while I'll see an expression on someone's face during a rainstorm that signals they've seen me wearing one of my hats and had the epiphany that hats can indeed serve a practical purpose and are more than just a fashion item. On the other hand, I've had a number of brief encounters with other hat wearers during which we simply nod and smile at each other, silently acknowledging, "You're doing it right."

My father and grandpa had it right. There weren't any air conditioners, heating could be "spotty" and roofs often leaked. Weather in SoCal is nice, but when it rains, well... People fail to see the value of a hat until they come in handy (pointing to my hand). Then they think about it... for about three minutes.

You, Captain O and Guillaume are absolutely right! A friend of mine was asked by a colleague if he were worried that rain might cause damage to his hat, and the colleague was quite surprised when told that the hat had a practical purpose and that a little rain would cause no problems. The colleague thought the hat was merely a fashion statement, showing how understanding of what a hat really does has gone from present-day society's consciousness.

I was in Walmart this afternoon in my "cheap" Jaxon Bowler, and my Coldsteel Carbon Fiber Slim Stick. A woman from the Garden department (in white hair, I might add) while shopping, she said that I looked "dapper". I took it in a good-natured vein and went on about my business. As I walked outside and passed the Garden Department with my three 40-ounce bottles of Sweet Baby Ray's "Spicy and Sweet" Barbecue Sauce and 32-serving Malt-O-Meal Rasin Bran in my bag the same woman called me "Dapper Dan". I don't mind a genuine compliment, but repeated calls of this nature seemed a bit empty and a touch snide. (Hey, when you're working at "Wally World" it is better to be a bit circumspect about what you say to people while representing the store).

I rolled my eyes, sighed and let it go, but you would think that mature people would think about what they say to people before they blurt it out, much less repeat it.

I didn't know Dapper Dan was a real thing, until somebody gave me a can for X-mas, as a gag gift. I think the brand was inspired by the movie, not the other way 'round.
