How do folks react to your hat wearing?

The local high school had a Back to School Night with parents visiting, and an ice cream social then 15 minute blocks to meet the teachers. I went with my daughter and did get some looks, but as I walked into a classroom one of her teachers said, "I LIKE your HAT!" My daughter laughed and I said "thank you."

I guess they have a "No Hats" rule at the school so I was sure to bring my tallest, boldest hat (not the Dobbs Temptation, which is truly a pimped out hat): the Everyman Indy with 5-1/4" crown after the center dent, medium pinch front with well defined side dents and a 2-3/4" raw brim.

I joked with my daughter, "I'm chewing gum, too. I assume that's against the rules as well?" What a rebel I've become. :p

I always comment on a person's hat if it's appropriate and timely. That usually leads to a nice discussion about hats, which is always fun.

Last Sunday afternoon a Older Gentleman in the store spotted me , came up , introduced himself , and said that's a fine looking Hat you have on there . I said Thanks , its old , but I like it . He was really nice . I'm sure he sported a few in his day . Probably not the old 20X Stetson with a few moth bites , but it still looks good .

Sadly, I wouldn't know on that point. Fortunately, considerable positive reinforcement has come from other quarters.

But once you get over the the initial self consciousness you're home free. Damn the torpedoes I say!

OT: If I haven't mentioned it to you before, I'm a Casey, and I notice you are in the land of Cleves. Haven't been up there in some time.

Boy, do I miss Presti's. And Corky & Lenny's.

Gotta watch out for those elderly ladies...

True , you never know , some you REALLY do . Old ladies can be mean , too . The other day one said Oh ! Now we have a Cowboy here . Hardy Har Har . I ignored her . But kids , old ladies , and elderly gentlemen will often times say Nice things . ... makes me think of the old song Watermelon Wine . Old dogs , children , and watermelon wine ~ Tom T. Hall .

thought of this thread just minutes ago while at Kings supermarket

while waiting at the deli counter with my daughter in the shopping cart ... I was wearing a Borsalino thin ribbon that is a bit of a beater ... my knock around hat ... Jim coined it the BorsaLAWNo after I once said it would be my lawn mowing hat ....
an older gentleman walked up from behind ... probably in his 80s but quite spry for his age ... as he walked past he said

"love the hat man, Borsalino?"

I responded ... "nailed it. good eye"

he said ..."I had one like it a long time ago... wore the hell out of it... gotta get me another one."

I said ..."what size are you? I may have something for you"

he responded while looking through loaves of bread ... "oh I don't remember I had a lot more hair then."

we both laughed and went our separate ways wishing each other a lovely day

I'm laughing to myself as I write this....
While picking up the balloons today at Card and Party Factory for my grandson's first birthday, a girl behind the counter told me "I like your hat, it's nice. I've got a thing for hats" [emoji16] .

Haha! See that reminded me. I totally forgot about it.
When I just met Emmanuel he frequently wore a homburg hybrid type hat.
I remember he got the " you work in a circus or something" quite often.

I got quite nice compliments last week.
At an event this guy came up to me and said ; I can't help looking at you, of all the people in this room no one else catches my eye. Your hat gives you such presence I can't look away.
( queue the cheese )
Then his wife joined in and said it's true, looking at you makes me want to wear a hat.

So she's coming by next week to try some on and see what she would like.

It goes both ways, men like looking at women in hats and vice versa.

On our way back from picking up my hats from Mike at NW Hat Co, we stopped to get something to eat at McD. It was rainy, windy and stormy with worse weather on the way, so we wanted to make things quick. As we were waiting to order, this guy walks by and says "I like your hat," or "Nice hat," or something like that. I said thanks, and after we got our food and picked a table I told my wife, "this may sound crazy to you, but I feel like I want to give that guy my hat." To which she replied, "You ARE crazy!"

But I couldn't help that feeling. I had a new custom 100% beaver fedora in my trunk, along with the Stratton western-to-outback conversion that Mike had also cleaned up for me. I felt like I had 2 new hats in my trunk, and the hat on my head is going to get less use because I like the Stratton outback so much. I was wearing an LL Bean Moose River hat that was made by Stetson. I paid $45 for it, and use it a lot as a beater hat that I don't care about getting soaked or a little dirty. And there was that young man, sitting with his wife and two young daughters eating their breakfast at McDonalds. I felt like it was the right thing to do but let my wife's remark stop me.

I'm not rolling in dough, so just giving away $45 is not something I would normally do. But I still wish I had given my hat to that guy.
