How do folks react to your hat wearing?

I'd guess that a "Smoky the Bear"hat will get comments most anywhere.

True RJR, also scouting has been so influential in modern society. Mind you I would not give a hoot if the comments were negative, I like the hats so I wear the hats.

Funny but I have just thought about a trip I had a few years ago and while both in India and Cambodia I had people wanting their photo taken with the odd portly person sporting a Akubra Safari, smoking a pipe and dressed in khaki and olive drab. Again a very positive response.

Wore a wide brim straw hat (a $10 Dorfman Pacific 388 to be exact) to a Farmers' Market on Saturday and got a compliment from a guy there. I wasn't expecting a compliment on a $10 hat that most people see as a gardening hat or beach hat. It's was sunny and hot and the guy said, "that's a nice hat! Does it keep you cool?"

I thanked him. It was unexpected and nice.

So I wonder if it was one of you guys...

At the Ohio State Fair yesterday to see Deep Purple, wearing my Adam Pacesetter beater. A lot of hats at the fair, mostly big ol' cheap straws, cloth hats, and other methods of sun protection. A couple of nice Panamas. Walking through one of the pavilions, I see a younger guy in a really nice, tall crown, straight-blocked brown fedora. Yeah, he noticed me, too. Being guys, we tried our best not to appear to be looking at the other's hat, but we were. I told my wife it looked like an Akubra, as it was the same chocolate brown as my Akubra Fedora, but it could have been a Fed IV or, by the dimensions, vintage.

Inside the show, we walked by each other and he complimented my hat. I returned the compliment, but we didn't talk.

So, which one of you was it?

Funny story about hat wearing:

Almost every Sunday after church our family eats at the local Mexican restaurant. Well, for the past several weeks, for one reason or another, we haven't been there. Last night my daughter came by the house with a good story. She had gone to that same Mexican restaurant for lunch yesterday and the owner said to her, "where has your family been, we haven't seen you all in a while." My daughter went on to say that the owner said to her, "when we see your Dad driving up, we all say here comes Al Capone." My daughter told him that she hears that a lot from her friends, who mainly ask "is your Dad in the mafia?" To which she said she always replies no and tells them that her Dad's in "the flower business."

Big Man...that's a funny one! It reminds me of a couple of things (one hat related and one Capone related). When I was younger, I used to wear my cousins army hat from Vietnam. When I grew a beard, my friends started calling me Fidel. Yeah, another notorious character.

Also, my dad and uncles used to tell me that being from Chicago, when they went into the army in WWII, everyone thought they already carried machine guns (Chicago Typewriter). :)

Those are good ones.

It's funny what some people think, especially what they think and we never know. The guys at the Mexican restaurant have never made a "hat comment" to me, but it was obvious from what they said to my daughter that they noticed me every time . Of course, in their defense, at 6'-6" and 380 lbs it's almost impossible not to notice me - hat or no hat. [huh]

I forgot all about this one, but about a month back someone said I reminded him of Inspector Gadget when I was wearing my fedora.

HA! I think that's exactly what we need photogravity...tools that come out of our fedoras. Like the Roy Rogers Quick Shooter Hat. :) Jim West (Wild Wild West) had tools in his hat too.

^ I forgot all about WWW. I wonder if the episodes are on Netflix. On another note, based on the way I was treated by our friends at the TSA on a couple of recent flights, you'd almost think I had tools, bombs and contraband hidden in my hat. Their response to my hat wearing was less then admirable, to put it mildly.

I still watch WWW on a local station. James West was a hero of mine when I was growing up. Oh and my big sister 'loved' him. LOL! I'm pretty sure there are full episodes on YouTube.

Interesting regarding the TSA. I thought about that recently when I considered flying to a niece's wedding. I was going to wear my Panama hat and I pictured them ripping it apart to check it. I ended up not being able to go anyway.

I just went to court to finish up an estate issue and I kept setting off the metal detector and wand. They smiled, patted my pocket and let me go. I told the officer that I was glad I wasn't at the airport, or they would have been stripping me down and getting the rubber gloves. He just laughed.

Later when I got home, I found a metal tin of candy that I had forgotten. The machine doesn't lie.

I think the "Wild Wild West" may have my favorite tv theme song ever!

The entire opening was excellent, except I like the opening that shows him punching the girl instead of just walking away with a tip of the hat. Oh well for hat etiquette LOL!

Now that I think of it, he had tools 'everywhere', not just his hat. Oh and now I pay much closer attention to all the hats worn on the show. :)

The TSA inspected the hat very closely. Perhaps if I had put it through the X-ray machine, they wouldn't have checked it out so closely. I don't often fly, but I remember why I avoid it after being on 6 different flights over the course of 4 days.

OK, this is kind of an oddball, but a nice comment that needs an explanation. I did go to that reunion BBQ that I posted about earlier. There were no derogatory comments about my Panama hat like I expected. In fact, everyone was pretty civil this year compared to last. Not sure why everyone was so vicious last year.

Anyway, the only comment about my hat wearing came from a friend that was calling me Mayor Stoner. I loved it! We are both old TV show buffs, so coming from him, it was an enjoyable reference.

Mayor Roy Stoner was the second mayor on the old Andy Griffith Show, which was among our favorites (along with the Honeymooners and 'fedora' wearing Ed Norton, HA!). We had a nice laugh about it and even talked about how the first mayor (Pike) was more of a 'stingy brim' guy. :)

Looking back at the show, I realize that many characters wore straw hats. Some nice, some dilapidated (Otis). Funny the things you notice once you start wearing hats.

I never put my hat through the X-ray. I wear it until they ask me to remove it, if they ask me at all. If they want to put it through X-Ray I then ask if they want something on their head that has been through an X-ray machine where things off people's feet have passed. They then hand check it and off I go.
