How do folks react to your hat wearing?

I've weighed in on this thread before, but I've received compliments more frequently over the last year or so. Sometimes I get them for several days in a row. Occasionally someone asks about the hat or where they can get one like it. I was once referred to as Dr. Jones by a work colleague but it was in jest so I didn't take it seriously. I have never received a negative comment.

A few days ago while I was tidying up in the garden (hatless for a change:eeek a neighbour wanders over and asks where he can get a hat like the ones I usually wear, as it looks so good, very smart. Hopefully that will be another among our number

I always respond to that question in one of three ways...

"More than I should have," or
"What is your need to know?" or
"Good hats have a wide range of pricing, from a few bucks to up to several thousand dollars. This one is somewhere between."

I'm not quite sure what to think of folks who'll roll out $100+ for a pair of tennis shoes that'll need replacing in 6 months, but can't wrap their mind around the thought that you paid much more than last nights dinner for something that, if even half@ssed taken care of, will last pretty much the rest of your life.

Over the course of the last ten days I have had two strong verbal compliments. One a gentlemen commenting and liking my Arkbura hemp the other a lady liking my ventilated high grade Panama, saying it reminded her of her late husband and his hat wearing habit and style.

Went into a dive bar for a couple beers yesterday wearing my Montecristi Fino, and the guy I sat next to started making "nice hat" compliments and after showing it to him and letting him handle it a bit he started with the questions. Where to get, what's the difference in grades and so forth. Made my couple of beers more enjoyable and the "why do you wear and collect cowboy boots" questions were avoided.

Up until now, I've never elicited a reaction, but have received many favorable responses.

I usually wear hats only in the summer, which are Montecristi Panamas. Many women smile or tell me that they like the hat. Italian men are pretty hat savy, and they too let me know they like the hat. Many ask where I got the hat, and some ask specific questions about it.

I was fairly well informed before, but now that I've found Brent Black's website, (thanks to the FL), I'll now be able to get into long conversations.

That would 'definitely' draw a reaction of some sort. Nah, our skeeters are so bad here, that I'm usually running home from BBQs, crying like a little girl come evening time. Those blood thirsty gals love me.

The other day I was sitting at the car-wash, drinking coffee, and wearing my navy blue Stetson Renaissance Milan when I noticed a guy sitting some yards away giving me a really dirty look. Shaved head, needed a facial shave badly, stained t-shirt, shorts and flip-flops. I knew it was about the hat. I ignored him, and when I got the car I got nothing but compliments about the hat. This ever happen to anybody?

I was thinking about this thread yesterday. I like to walk at lunchtime, and often walk a track around a soccer practice field near my office. Just me and one other guy out there yesterday, and he was walking a bit faster than me, so he caught up. As he caught up, I greeted him, and the first words out of his mouth (after hello) were nice hat! Is that a Stetson? So, since I was wearing my CD, I gave him the Akubra sales pitch and told him to check out EA. He was a Stetson man ,ad also said he had owned some Dobbs, but it didn't sound like he was a regular, every day wearer. Anyway, we walked around, talked hats, weather education, the differences between northern and southern Ohio, and various other topics.

All-in-all, a rather positive portion of my Manic Monday.

People look and sometimes even stare when I'm wearing a hat. I doubt it's a negative thing like some folks fear though. I've never seen anyone roll their eyes or point and giggle. I've never heard an insult. I did; however, have one man walk up and ask my where I'd bought one of my hats and how much I'd paid. I think the fact that hats aren't as common as they used to be is a good thing. It makes you look just a little but sharper than the other guy. You look a little more stylish than the other guy.
BTW, in some settings it can make a huge difference. I'm a bassist. One time I walked into Guitar Center with a ball cap on and not a single clerk greeted me or paid any attention to me at all...period. No one tried to sell me a single thing. The next time, I walked in there wearing my Christy's of London open weave straw trilby and they treated me like I was John Mayer or something. Everybody was "yes, sir/no, sir" and offering to take instruments off the wall and offering to hook up gear for me. They even offered me a private room to try out some basses. Oddly, I wasn't even in there for any real shopping. I was with my wife and we had a few minutes to kill so we were just window shopping.
In the car, we both laughed at how much celebrity mileage I got out of simply wearing a nice hat!

Meh...honestly I wonder if it really was a dirty look. Why would someone give you a dirty look for wearing a hat? Maybe his eyesight is poor and he was having trouble seeing that far. Maybe your hat reminded him if someone he misses. Maybe he wants a hat like that but was timid about asking you about it. Who knows.
