How do folks react to your hat wearing?

A guy complimented me on my hat as I was coming out of the post office this morning....... then he asked if I could spare a few bucks :doh:

I've had plenty of sales people compliment me on my hat to get me talking to them so they can sell me something.

Not sure if I shared this before, getting old and confused. Last summer my wife and my 2 year old and I had to stay in downtown San Francisco for three days for a conference she was attending. There was a huge amount of homeless people in the area of our hotel, but one guy kept nodding at me when we would walk by. Coming back one evening, he stopped us and said "I like your lid, man. I like those shoes too. If I can tell you where you got 'em will you give me a buck?" I agreed, since I was going to give him something anyway, and he said "You got 'em on your feet!" I laughed, gave him a fiver and we wished him a good night. I was wearing my VS Dove with a 2 7/8" brim, to keep it hatty. Frank

Dmy partner loves it, hated my usual winter hats..... Wool watch caps, liked the flat caps better. Got a Pork Pie recently and now she's happy happy

Frussell, we've got a guy in Manhattan's upper west side who does that same "I know where you got 'em" shtick. He's really good at it. I enjoyed it so much, I actually did give him a dollar one time!

I find that people of all ages and stripes compliment me. Around court, the clerks and other lawyers kinda notice now when I don't have a hat. Shopping in Atlanta in Lenox Mall the day after Thanksgiving, many, many people complimented me. Clerks in J Crew went out of their way (a young man in his middle 20's really put down a stack of clothes and walked to me and told me he liked the hat, as I could track him). Seems everytime I wear a Buckaroo Hat, it is noticeable. I guess because first, it is not a stingy and second, maybe the felt or maybe the ribbon edge treatments I have on my Buckaroos or maybe the different (read, non-black) ribbons, or a combination of all of that.

There is a thread at askandyaboutclothes.com, in the fashion forum, about how men who wear "dress" hats call attention to themselves, and maybe it is out of place. I don't know about that. I see Tilley's and Western Hats and ballcaps. I see skull caps and the like. In summer, yes, I see more panama hats then say a fedora in winter. It is what it is, but I don't feel I stand out in a bad way or I am doing it to call attention to myself. I got my first hat because I wanted my head to be covered when the wind rips across the Mississippi River and hits the tunnel between buildings and well, it kept me warmer

Been wearing my VS Dusty Lane Silverbelly with a suede tan jacket. Had a pharmacist where we shop tell me she was really digging my hat. The wife and I went to supper at our favorite italian place. Owners daughter said she was loving my hat. Today a young well dressed employee of another pharmacy said sir i love your hat. Of course I thanked them all kindly and showed them the red satin lining and such. Got to spread the gospel of Art to 3 nice young folks!

Good Lord, the things you find on the internet. The kind of people who make comments like the ones to which you refer are Puritans who, I'll bet, have never done anything original or creative in their lives, and are incapable of thinking for themselves. Sit at a cafe table in Paris for a few hours and watch the wonderfully individualistic, and tasteful, outfits that go by. It makes the heart glad.

Really. I found t-bob's comment to be out of place because I don't see where the analogy comes from.

I wear fedoras because I love the way they look, and they do the best possible job doing what I want a hat to do. Nothing else works as well, from a brimless cap to a full-sized Western.

Wear a hat if you would like to, there's nothing wrong with that. There are also people on that forum you've mentioned that do wear fedoras and other dress hats, but I don't think there are many. Although I believe hats are gaining a little more popularity for those that frequently wear suits, they tend to take a more safe-for-business approach to dressing. I can imagine there are many people that would, if they didn't care about negativity from others about their hat preference, would wear dress hats. I really don't see it as such a big deal to, for example, wear a hat and bring it to work with you, but taking it off upon arrival. That seems to fit well for someone with a desk job, at least. More people should consider hats, as they are practical, and can look good in the modern world as generations before.

I usually wear a cap to work, either a brown flat cap, or a camouflage Army BDU cap, I work in a warehouse. Our HR Manager was recently diagnosed with breast cancer and has since shaved her head and started wearing hats to work, so the company had hat week to show support. Yesterday I wore a fedora. I started writing down, the comments I got so I could remember them all. The hat in question is a chocolate brown Knox 15. One woman told me I looked like a distinguished gentleman and reminded her of her grandfather, it goes down hill from there. Here is a list: Abraham Lincoln, Indiana Jones, Pimp, Clyde Barrow, Michael Jackson, Freddy Kreuger, and Amish/Mennonite. I am going to wear my taupe Brent stingy brim today and see what reactions I get.

I have a full head of hair, but my girlfriend thinks most guys who wear hats do so because they are bald. So every time we're in town, if we run into someone she knows she makes me take my hat off to prove I have hair.

After years of being self conscious around certain groups or in large groups I now don't even notice when I am wearing a hat let alone what other people think about it.

I'm an English professor here and wear a hat (usually a straw) to work every day. I always take it off as soon as I walk into the classroom and get my stuff out. Until reading this, I'd never thought about it before. When I was growing up in the 50's and 60's, that's what the men did.
