How do folks react to your hat wearing?

It's very common in London's West End in larger, fashionable pubs, clubs, and casinos. It's a security thing: the venues are covered by CCTV - patrons who have a hat over there face are harder to identify should they cause trouble, whether by stealing, starting a brawl, or counting cards or otherwise cheating the house. I've never felt any need to object, but then anywhere I've seen it in force I'd have instinctively removed my hat on the way in anyhow. [huh]

I remember the "Hoodies" ban when I lived in the UK, but not the no hats policy.

@Matt: I never realised that about Atlanta - guess I'm too naive ;)

I strolled into the video store one evening last week wearing one of my black homburgs and, when I got to the counter to check-out, the girl behind the counter commented saying, "You always wear such cool hats!". Apparently I have been noticed before.
Kind of made my day.

From their perspective, the problem is that most people don't make that distinction, and any customers wearing a ball cap could point to you and argue, "He's wearing a hat; why can't I wear mine?" Of course, that doesn't explain why these establishments have a "no hats" policy in the first place, but they're their establishments and they're allowed (to a point) to establish a code of conduct for their patrons regardless of how arbitrary or unnecessary their rules might seem to be.

My chain bank has posted great big signs now that ban sunglasses, all hats & hoodies. They done it for a few years now, maybe about 4 or 5 & is one of the main reasons I avoid stepping into their lobby & do the drive through route. I've been told to take off my oakley wraps but told them they were script so wasnt taking them off.

Also, sort of related.. our DMV bans all non religious head coverings so unlike the 1 gentleman who said his license pic has him in his hat we cant do it here in DE, at least. Also you have to make a sour face (non emotion) for your pic now cause of the stupid facial scanning software they use. But I wont get into the "big Brother" garbage going on these days.

And for a good note, I was at our local county association today to do a license class & brokers licensing class as a monitor, so I wore my newest favorite purple dress shirt, black vest & slacks & my POS wool fedora. Couple older gentleman & lady noticed I was standing there after the class getting paperwork together to turn in & remarked on my hat. One said "thats what type of hat" "Fedora, but its a wool crushable" said I. The lady laughed & said "but its a fedora, not a baseball cap, & looks good on you too".
"Thats true" I responded. The other guy said "looks good, even if it is wool" with a laugh.

So, I walked out with a lighter step, specially since most around here know me by my hawaiian tag. :eusa_doh: so now I need a new tag to set me apart from the other local agents. Heheheheh

Wont fly at Delawares DMV for picture taking. :p
Told them I was hisdatic jewish & needed to wear my hat, they said I could wear the lil beanie that I cant remember the name of but no hat.
It seems only the lil hat, or the arabic head swathing the females wear would work & at that the swathing has to be pulled down so you can see the face, or no license. The license is a priveldge, not a right. :eusa_doh:

And forgive any misspellings, I mean no disrespect by it.

Sadly, I attended a funeral yesterday for a distant family member, and wore a wool felt with my black suit.
A somewhat "snooty" aunt saw me, and commented on my hat. I told her that lately I had come to appreciate fedora style hats. She asked "and WHERE do you wear these hats?" I replied "usually on my head".

I know exactly the type of relative that you are talking about. They are never within your immediate family, whenever you meet them, they always have something to say about your lifestyle that they disapprove of and always seem to be right in your face.
My wife and I used to know such an old dear. We have seen her at a couple of Christenings, she strongly disapproves of childless couples, and makes no bones about putting her views about. "You're next," she would tell us, not even knowing, or bothering, if we were infertile.
Last time we caught up with her was at a funeral. "You're next," I said, turning on a heel and walking away, leaving her all flustered and blustered.

Think you mean Hasidic--and it's called a yarmulke (pronounced YAH-muh-kuh) or kippah (kee-PAW). Demonstrated on my coconut, both without and with hat. :)

There IS a reason that this type of relative is not considered "close".

Thanks Aaron,
I didnt have my spellchecker one & I will admit I couldnt remember the yarmulke, which I didnt knoww but didnt want to offend further by really butchering the spelling.

As I said, my misspellings were not meant to offend, they were just due to my laziness in not running my spellchecker. Oh man, now I see the built in spellchecker, now I am a dunce.

I was wearing my New Yorker at the grocery store after church, as well as a collared shirt, sport jacket, slacks, and wing tips. An older couple passed me and I heard the woman say to the man "He must be a neat man."

I wear a Stetson. I'm a Texan. Felt all year long. Straw is for farmers.
When my dad's health was failing we had him in a nursing home on doctor's orders. One evening we were taking him out to eat and pulled up smoke was billowing out of every door. Fire trucks ever where sheriff cars all over. I got out of the pickup walked right past the deputies and firemen straight back to his room.
No one even thought about stopping me. I went up front he was there in the dining room. The ladies asked how I got in. I said 'the hat'.

No worries at all, my good man! I figured I'd help out a little. :)

Today we had a little Halloween party for the residents where I work. I decided to wear a 1949 suit with a crimson shirt and white tie for the gangster look. Also wore my knox hat. I got called pimp-daddy and gangster by the staff, all in good health. The older ladies said I look nice and thought I was heading to church, brought a smile to my face. Got called debonair by a 90 year old woman, that made my day.
