How do folks react to your hat wearing?

Increasingly less, though. They've been dropped entirely in civil and family law cases. On the criminal law side of the courts they are still worn at Crown Court and Court of Appeal level, but not at all in the Supreme Court. Supreme Court Justices and the remaining Law Lords only wear them now on ceremonial occasions, not in actual court session.

I was approached by a security guard the other day. He complemented my appearance, shook me by the hand and said how wonderful it was to see a young man who looks after himself.

All that for what most folks here would consider casual attire and a cheapo hat! It really brightened up my day.

Walmart seems to be the best place for me to get compliments from strangers. Earlier today a gentleman made sure to get my attention while I was walking around on the phone so that he could tell me he really liked the black rimmed Panama I was wearing.

At a classic car show this morning, it wasn't so much my hat as my shirt and summer blazer that was getting constant remarks, mostly positive too. But the most amusing remark came from some fellow who had fallen ill. A call had gone out over the public address for a doctor or a nurse, my wife responded, she was a paramedic for thirty years.

The fellow had succumbed to too much sun, and probably not enough water. My missus was grilling him: "How much beer have you had?" He looked a tad sheepish but responded, "just one large bottle." "Really?" said my disbelieving wife. Giving him a glare of pure napalm. "Well I have also had a glass of wine," he admitted. The interrogation wasn't over. "Just one glass?" My suspicious missus asked. More prodding revealed that, apart from the half glass or so that his wife drank, he had finished off the bottle. "You're dehydrated," my wife said, "and you've had too much sun."

She got him to drink water, and I lent him my battered Biltmore, it was a tad too big but it didn't flop over his ears. It was when he returned the hat, that he remarked on my blazer. "Don't you feel conspicuous," he asked, "conspicuous, yes, self conscious, no." I told him. He just smiled and said he wished that he had my confidence.

Was that a compliment? Probably, I call it a back handed compliment. This was what the fuss was all about.

Scotty, you are as complimentary as ever, and it's much appreciated. There's a tale to be told about my 'banana' outfit. A few years back Tina and I went to a rather good wedding. It was second time round for both bride & groom. Without the self imposed pressures that newlyweds experience, these two went for a themed wedding. Their honeymoon was to be in Hawaii, so they chose Hawaii as the theme for their wedding. I wore a sky blue linen suit, but how quickly I found out that linen cannot resist being creased up. Just a half hour drive to the function and the pants looked like I had slept in them.

Later I told Tina that I loved the suit but oh how I wished that I had listened to the tailor and had a 60/40 linen/polyester mix. So, bearing that in mind Tina came across a pair of trousers in a charity shop, for the princely sum of four pounds. They weren't linen/poly, in fact they were linen/calico, but they were far to big for me, what's more, they were very modern looking, slim line & tapered, but they were of a very smart appearance.

The yellow in this picture is the result of my inexperience at photoshopping, the colour is much more cream than yellow. Anyway, Tina unpicked the trousers completely, she then brought the squab of the backside in, repositioned the crotch area, replaced the zipper with a buttoned fly, brought the length up to my measurement, leaving enough material to turn up a reasonable size cuff.

Just in case there was any chance of the hems fraying, she sewed a line of reinforcement around the inside of the hem line.

Now I have the perfect summer, linen like trousers, all they need is a shirt to compliment them. So Tina made a matching yellow shirt.

My grandmother was a seamstress, worked in a shop in downtown manhattan and regularly made outfits for Lena Horne. I even got to meet her one time...set my little 10 year old heart fluttering for months. Still love hearing her voice to this day...it was even more amazing, sultry and alluring in person.....Ahhhhh....

But I digress.
My grandmother was a seamstress and made clothes, the way your wife does, from scratch. She could take measurements on us grandkids, get fabric from her basement stash, and make a full outfit for any of us within 2 hours. With just a day of notice, she would have brand new sunday outfits for all of us stitched up by saturday night.
Simply amazing. With the clothes she had us wearing, you would never know from looking at us that we ever knew anything of the word "Poor".
She made my grandfather a leather jacket that fit me (and him) like it was made for me. And thick durable leather too. I wore it until I got married and gained weight and started working out. Passed the jacket along to another that had their eye on it...probably should have kept it though. Ah well, too late now...
Amazing woman...miss her.

Two women commented on my dress/hat today. One said, don't you look dapper! The other just oggled me from her 4WD SUV and smiled really BIG. I smiled back and nodded and I swear she smiled even more.

Well! Returning from vacation I was surprised by a nice email invitation...
Program management has taken notice of my dapper dress and scheduled me to be an actor for our organizational video shoot this week!

They're temporarily upgrading my security clearance level and getting me Site-B admission for the video shoot.

Wait a second...that doesn't exactly sound like a "Video shoot" video shoot...
Sounds more like more testing...more dangerous testing...possibly including me!!


Um...if no one hears from me after Tuesday-Wednesday, please send someone looking.

I'm a choir singer, and recently we were to sing at a confirmation in church. I was wearing a dark blue suit and my most recent acquisition, the Akubra Stylemaster in acorn fawn. I was just arriving at the church and there was a pretty big crowd outside. A beautiful day, sunny and warm. I noticed a group of 4-5 women ahead of me, and the reason I noticed them was because they had noticed me. They were all turning their heads, talking amongst themselves and grinning. Not in a derisive way, but as if I were exotic. The suit+hat combo I was wearing this day was particularly favourable, if I say so myself, and was even told as much by women in the choir - even if the colour combo is not the most intuitive one.

And mind you, the 4-5 women who looked at me were all dressed in this garb:

The funny thing is that there is a men's bunad as well, but men rarely wear it - and that's a shame, because if ever you wanted to look like an early 19th century officer or aristocrat...

There is traditional headwear for both the male and female version, but while there are far more women than men who wear bunad, men seem to be more likely to include the hat.

That is cool. I HAVE seen these in real life (as I have other National Traditional Clothing from many nations) at many white and black tie events as well as parades at Lions Clubs International Conventions and events through the years. i am always impressed and love to see them all!!!

I replied with "Hey thank you, your hat is pretty kewl too!"
We both tipped our hats to each other and I made my way into the lab...

This afternoon I was in unusual environs (for me) - downtown Brooklyn near Metrotech on the Court Street plaza, lots of people walking every which way, and I got a compliment from a gentleman on my Fed IV (featured this morning in the WHAYWT thread). Always a nice thing.
