How Did Your Hat Come In Handy Today?

Greetings fellow Loungers,

We have daily hat threads to talk about the looks, but what about the practical side of our chosen headwear? My hats have useful purposes beyond looks and personal sun protection all the time. (If this is somehow a duplicate idea, feel free to merge it.)

Today, my Belfry Straw Bogart came in handy as a sunshade for me and also for a friend. I was at a baseball game after work, with a group of 20 or so fellow college interns.

I'd just gotten the hat yesterday and wore it to fit the "white-out" team spirit towel-twirling rally. At the game, I set it on a sharp angle to let the 2" brim block the setting sun from my eyes, and the friend next to me gladly stayed in the hat crown's shade. Worked well for us both, but I need more brim to shade more than two people!

So how has your hat come in handy today? Beating away bugs? Catching candy thrown in your direction? Impromptu frisbee? Or, better yet, had your hat won someone's heart?

The guy in the background, who's wearing a towel on his head, is looking very covetous of your lid......

I was caught in an abandoned warehouse with only my hat, an old clothespin, and a bird nest I found in a corner.
Then, I remembered my seventh grade science.
Not only did I escape, I took down a small team of terrorists.

Ya know I only ever watched one episode of MacGyver. I think he blew up a jeep with a pine cone. It made me long for the artistic credibilty and realism of "The Six Million Dollar Man".

As for my lid (Akubra Traveller), it kept the burning sun off of my head and face just as it was intended to do.

It looks like you had a nice day at the ballpark to enjoy some companionship and your new Bogart.

As always, my hats served to get my wife mad at me.

... but maybe it isn't the hats?

Today, I called our back bedroom "the hat room." Boy did that set her off.

My 47 Ford, 67 Fairlane and 52 IH pickup all had great sun visors, but these modern cars ... they just don't work well and they are hard to manipulate, so my hat serves as a visor everywhere ... even at work ... I get tired of squinting under the florescents, so the hat is handy there, too.

in addition to the usual sun and weather protection, my fedora serves as protection when im de-vining the mess that is my camp's wooded areas. unchecked vine growth kills the trees so im in there with my saws and clippers. the hat keeps falling debris off my head.

Nice eyes, Tomasso, that is quite the look he was giving me. Future hat wearer, perhaps? That's one way to spread the style!

Heresy to most here I'm sure but my cheap hats serve as a catch-all at the bar for cell-phone, keys, sunglasses etc.

That's not so bad, I do that all the time too! Usually it's with my streetcar-service peaked caps. I'll toss all my typical uniform tools, accessories, and pocket items in my cap when I go to sleep. That way, it's all in one place and I can go from asleep to in service in under a half hour, even with taking time for a good breakfast. :)

I was cutting off some fence posts using a circular saw at about face level. The resulting shower of sawdust, thanks to my lid, didn't lodge itself in what's left of my hair.

I took my two Shetland Sheepdogs for a nice walk this morning.....BEFORE.....the hot New Mexico sun made it too uncomfortable for them.....and ME!!
Anyway, I have a nice 7X Beaver Brand Open Road-style western hat that I bop around in.

Walking home from giving tuition, my Fed kept typical English summer drizzle off my glasses. I really cannot understand why everyone is not a hat-wearer.

Furthermore I naively thought that I was the only person who used their hat as a handy repository for all those things - keys, wallet, phone....I'm glad that everybody else does this too!
