What about a fez, eyepatch, and a Hollywood jacket?

Lookin' sharp, by the way, Mr. Stovall.

1922/23, I believe.

You're half right and I'm half wrong.

A new Turkish parliament, the Grand National Assembly, was formed in Ankara in April 1920. It conferred upon Mustafa Kemal Pasha the title 'President of the National Assembly', and repudiated the Sultan's government in Istanbul.

However ...

The Turkish War of Independence didn't end until April 1923, after which Kemal Ataturk really got down to the business of republic-building. Still, I'd argue that the Ottoman Empire's authority to govern essentially vanished in April 1920, thanks to the Grand National Assembly (and the world war that preceded it!)

I doubt if our hip hop wannabe compatriots will look as good as J.M. however.:) I get giddy imagining a world gone mad where we see music videos with "gangsta rappers" all wearing fezs while they jump around posturing and rhyminglol lol

No need to argue the fine print Mister.
I like 'em, you don't.

But you'd look good in one...
I reckon.

I think the fez, like its cousin the smoking cap, is situational headgear. It feels appropriate in its own mileau but assumes the role of costume out of it. One thing the fez needs is high ceilings...

I just realized that some of you think that's me in the photo. It's actually the guy that makes them. In fact I'm pretty sure he's a lounger too. His avatar shows him in a black tux and black fez with a cigar, can't remember his name.

Not necesserily; two of my tarboushes are of the Egyptian military style, and thus both softer and shorter (almost a skull cap). I actually prefer them to the taller one's, easier to wear and passable as a smoking cap. My favourite is my blue military one with a gold tassel, apparently (according to the dodgy street vendor) a repro of the one's worn by Farouk's Palace Guards. I don't beliece him, but damn, is it stylish!

Thanks for the word on that Cobden. I was unaware of the shorter style. Are they at all similar to a military pillbox hat? Most of my recent mental pictures of tarboush-wearing are admittedly based on Pearce's Mamur Zapt stories. Also, at 76" in height and new wearer of one of Art's Manhattans, I have recently been reminded of the need for high ceilings, (and ceiling fans and punkahs).

There not quite the same as a pillbox, as they aren't stiff. They have a more rounded shape (think bowler to a tophat), and are crushable, unlike the taller ones. More like the things the Greek army wears

The tall one's, on the other hand, can only be worn on trains and London taxis; they don't work on any other transport means ;)

Well, the wearing of Fezzes (in Turkey)was banned in 1925, by Atatürk, so maybe pre-1925 Ottoman Civil Servant.

I don't agree anyway-

I think of Sydney Greenstreet in Casablanca and I like the look.

A nice linen suit and a dark red Fez is a great look for North Africa.

I have a Fez, which i bougt many years ago in Damascus. It is not a high quality Fez, but made of straw covered with red wool felt.

What i do not have though (but would like to have), is the linen suit.

The Village Hat Shop also sells them: http://villagehatshop.resultspage.com/hats/Fez

Yeah that's him, I found it through his View Profile. He had a link to a group called thecultoftheeye.com (they have an official club fez), and from there I went to the site where they make and sell them, fez-o-rama.com.

Now wether he's the guy in the photo or now I don't know. They don't have captions.
