What is it about that red lipstick that looks soooo inviting!! You would think that bright red would be like bright blue and would look...garish if nothing else, but quite the opposite. It's sexy, alluring, distracting, and just downright HOT on the gals!!! So what is it, guys (or gals) that makes those red lips so kissable, Hmmm?;)

Well technically its the hight of sexual arousal. That is what is being mimicked, or rather exaggerated. The Face flushed with blood, reddening the cheeks and lips.

It sure is hard to find the RIGHT shade of red! I'm looking for a certain one and have tried every one in the store. I want a deep, glossy blood red.

What are your favorites guys? Glossy or no? Orangey red, blue red, ect?

Another thing, most girls I assume have to have some gumption to wear the red. Is this alluring to the menfolk? Knowing that the girl is not afraid to wear it, knowing it's empowering?

That sure is the truth! If you are going to wear the red you have to have a walk that can back it up.

Glossy YES! I don't think most men would even realize that red lipstick is empowering to women, except the fact (that for me at least ) I get weak in the knees and feel like I want to lay my coat down over a puddle for the lady to step across. For me it's the most seductive thing a gal can wear, well...almost.

Helps if The Face is framed by hair and clothing that are classic, elegant and just a touch prim...say a dark print dress with a starchy white collar. The contrast approaches, but never screams, incongruity.

That's certain.
I think it is knowing that you are in the presence of a woman who is very powerfully, unapologetically female.

Here's a question: Can an older woman get away with The Red without looking like a Red Hat Lady?

Check out Vivienne Westwood (my number one fashion inspiration). She wears dark reds (so as not to clash with her bold, orange hair) and is certainly no Red Hat lady! Matching the right shade to your skin and hair color is what makes it look nice. I think lining the lips properly gets much more important with aging as well -- and bleeding lipstick looks unbecoming at any age.

Woo, look at her go!

And just for kicks, Viv ten years ago (because her ensemble is just beautiful):

That said, I love my red lipstick! The more you wear it, the easier it is to get used to. Since I wear it almost everyday, I don't feel self-conscious about it, and since I have a few tricks up my sleeve, it stays on all day if I let it. However, I substitute red lip stain on dates so my date doesn't end up wearing my lipstick. ;) Lip stain is more subtle, but still gives one the classic look.

I don't own any other lipstick shades other than reds. It isn't me.

I love the Besam?© line of lipsticks for their vintage color and feel... but for dates with my beau I have to go for the new indelible lipsticks that don't come off until you want them off. It gives me the best of both worlds, red lipstick and kissing.

The indelible ones will last all night and through the next morning, if you want them too. They really do have that staying power, I have found, through meals and dancing and...stuff.

Gotta try Besame one of these days. I am a frugal girl, though, by necessity, and still buy Cover Girl and all that!

Say, who makes these Indelible lipsticks of which you speak?

KittyT,
I believe the Indelible is L'Oreal....wait, or is it Infallible? ....No, Indelible is Estee Lauder in the long slim gold tube.
Wait wait wait...Revlon makes an Indelible too. Ok now I am all confusticated!!!!!

I've never had a decent reaction to red lips. I guess it would help if I went places other than schools! I'll have to try more often, DH isn't a fan.
