Over more than 40 years I have worn a number of the heaviest of horsehide (and other leather) jackets for motorcycling and a variety of outdoor activities such as kayaking and mountaineering. As well as my own purchases (of most major makers including Aero and LW) I used to work for a UK motorcycle clothing manufacturer and I often got to try out their prototype leathers before they were finalised for sale.
I have never felt uncomfortable in wearing such a new jacket or have I suffered any after effects, such as you get when 'breaking in' new leather boots. I would like to see evidence of anyone who has suffered any actual physical effects (such as blisters, abrasions or wheals) from a leather jacket. I don't think it's 'a myth' - I think it's in people's minds.
