Aha!! wow, I'm on the lookout for a St.Regis, because I like that particular Homburg so much.. I don't think I would ever steam out the curl out of the brim... but hey, to each his own ;)

I normally wouldn't want to hurt a nice old hat like this either, but I figured I would get a bit more use this way. It was a bit small for me, and with the snapped down brim it works a bit better for me. Anyway, a little steam and it will jump right back to its old shape.

I was just being facetious. But you are right that something needs to change slightly about it. Someone else just told me that it needs to be trimmed a bit more, clearly I need to fix it somehow.

:eek:fftopic: I wonder if it might help to thin out your rather heavy eyebrows or to grow a little more moustache to balance out your facialhair- styling.. could be the lighting in the picture but All the weight is distributed across the upperpart of your face: eyes (no offence but are you using something to bring out your eyes more, like an eyeliner) and eyebrows which tend to make the pencilmoustache a touch too lite imho.. don't want to present myself as an expert cause I'm not, just wanna share a thought.;)

Thank you for commenting in such a clear manner. Now that you point it out, the contrast between my heavy eyebrows (that comes from the italian side of me) and the light moustache is a bit extreme. I am not terribly sure what to do about it, as I don't plan on doing anything to my eyebrows, and my moustache isn't getting any thicker (in density, that is. I could grow it a little less pencily, but I am not sure if that would help). I think I might just have to give up on the moustache for a while, and try again a little later and see if it works out better.

And to answer your question about eyeliner, no, I do not have anything of that sort on my eyes. It is interesting that you mention that, because as a performer, I often have to wear stage make up, and they almost never make me put on eyeliner because I have such dark lashes. Without the heavy eyebrows above them, my eyes look positively feminine.

The Hollywood Brim

I see a lot of neat pictures here of people wearing the Hollywood Brim. I like it too, but it's not always easy to attain. Others beside Depp are or were Barrymore, and lately, Downey Jr. in Sherlock Holmes. Dumb movie, but he looked sharp in his fedora.

You could go all out, and do a beard like rlk. You'd probably pull it off well. [huh]

When it comes to this style, some hats do work better than others. But it's not hard to attain if you have the right hat for it. Did you read the entries earlier in this thread? There are several concrete suggestions on how to go about it. ;)

Possibly?

Please pardon the pontification...

I grew my first beard when I was 19. It wasn't much of a beard though because the area adjacent to my bottom lip and the center of my chin was void of hair. My mustache was a thin downy blonde. It looked like a couple of overgrown lamb chops with a whisper of mustache.

At some point during this period I added a Mohawk and shaved a lightning bolt into my beard on my right side. Did I care what anybody thought? Heck no! Had I been a jackboot type instead of a sport shoe and sandle type I could have easily been labeled a skin head.

Over the years I quietly (or not) settled into a '70s Greg Allman type look. That worked out fine. My beard alternated from full to goatee as it still does today. But...

Once I noticed that I was looking like David Crosby I took the electric clippers to my nog and that is the look I wear today and shall be buried in.

Mr. Yepps, I consider your noir mustache quite amusing in a lightning bolt sort of way. You really have no reason to care what we think anyway. Apparently, in your career, you will be getting plenty of direction as to how you should look. Why do you think Brad Pitt and Johnny Depp walk around looking like dregs kicked off the back of a depression era flatbed?

Enjoy your hair while you have it, Yepps. Once you reach the age of many of us old farts you will find yourself spending more time grooming your brows, ears and nose than you do the hair or lack there of on your noggin.

Keep your lids on, folks, and watch out for stinkers.

If I could grow a beard I probably would. However, it does not run in my family at all. Even my father is not capable of growing a full beard. He almost always has a very thick goatee, but he is unable to connect it to sideburns.

And in response to Mr. CRH:
I do care what y'all think around here because you have shown yourselves to be gentlemen of generally very good taste, and I like to look good. Although you have a point... I do keep the moustache mainly for the entertainment value of it. It will probably go very soon.

Oh, and for the record, Johnny Depp can be really stylish when he so chooses. Tim Burton on the other hand...

Those folks who kicked 'em off the flat bed didn't exactly smell like roses anyway.

I believe wich if you want to have your own style, when you are ready to go away to some where, you must take the hat choosen and wear it, without loock in a mirrow, thence you are you self. No Capone style, No Bogart style, no imitations ¡¡¡¡¡¡

I have an incredibly thick, dark beard and mustache and a full head of hair and likely always will. I take after my mom's side on that. No baldness in the family on either side, actually. On the other hand, like yours, my dad has whispy blond hair and he can grow a mustache for a month before anyone notices it!

Here I am the last time I had a full beard (about 2002)...

... see what I mean?

I found having a beard that big a bit of a chore, though. Down to the mustache now a days.

I have to say, I hadn't thought much about trying such panache. But here is my effort at it...

Maybe it doesn't look so bad at that.

I think you've gotta do that at least some of the time with hats, otherwise you're not getting your full use out of them. Sometimes like that, sometimes regular, sometimes wear it pulled down on your brow if you just got a raise. The softness of a fedora gives it flexibility to angle in dozens of ways, all of which confer a different attitude or mood.
