i was watching charlie chaplin's "A Woman of Paris" (1923) on the independent film channel. noticed that one of the younger male leads . . . not adolphe menjou, although he was in the film ....was wearing a fedora with the bow of the ribbon tied in the back of the hat.

was this once the style in the 1920's . . . or just an affectation for this movie? anyone know?

just one of those things that you wonder about when watching old films.

Two 50s hats

I've got a Stetson 3x and an Italian Borsalino, both from the 50s I think, with back bows.

In the film The Wolfman, Lon Chaney Jr's bow is at the back of his hat.

Yes it was a style. I have a 40s Stetson fedora with the bow on the back as well as an old knox hat ad that shows a hat with the bow on the back.
