Hi there! Fedora lover with a school project!

Hello Everyone!

My name is Gabi and I am a cool doll doing a project on the Fedora!

I'm making my entire project on it's history of this wonderful hat.
-Where it came from (1800s Russia if you can believe it.)
-A survey of it from 1920-now. (If anyone has any info on this, I'd greatly appreciate it.)

I could actually really use your help. Being that you are all avid Fedora fans and experts, I need help in my "usage" section of my paper.
If you could guys, could you post a couple of lines answering maybe a couple of these Qs?
-Where do you wear your Fedora?
-Where DON'T you wear it?
-How do you tell the difference from a Fedora and...a Manhattan?

I have a few more, but I think I'll start on these.

This project is due on Wed, Nov 29 at 5 p.m. :D   (Talk about working under pressure! But hey, I'm studying to be a journalist, and I'm used to it.)

Also, if you answer a Q: first of all, you're the best, second of all, if you could put your first nameand the city you are from it would help. I need to site my Fedora expert sources. :eusa_clap
If you really want to go the extra mile, here's my e-mail: gwrite1@ufl.edu
We can have a short e-mail interview!

Thanks guys.
I really appreciate it!

Wow

That isn't much time.

OK, first things first: Welcome to The Fedora Lounge. I hope you'll stick around after your project is finished.

Seriously, your questions require some time to answer. If your library has a copy of the excellent book "Hatless Jack," which is a history of hat wearing in the US and abroad, that will be your best source of information.
I'm sure other members will chime in to help. Good luck!

Here are a few past lounge links

girl_inthecity,

I wear a hat everyday with a suit to work. I take my hat off in privite residences though not indoors all the time.I do wear my hat when in the newsroom at the paper. I think we all at the lounge take our hat of for the National Anthem and at times to show respect.

I never drink out of my hat though have had a Manhattan or two while wearing a Fedora in Manhattan.

Welcome and much luck on your paper,

WeeGee

P.S. The "Manhattan" is a name of a fedora style hat created by Master Hatter Art Fawcett.

So maybe that explains why I never get drunk and yet my head is always soaking wet!

Welcome to the Lounge

Sounds like a wonderful school project! I think that Weegee did a great job of summarizing the answers to your questions. The search function at the top of the page will lead you to plenty of other answers to questions that you never thought to ask.

Also, check out your local newsstands/book stores for a new magazine named Classic Style. It was just released, so it may be hard to find a copy, but it may help you in your research. There is also a link at the top of this page that will take you to the website.

Good Luck with your research!

Hello and welcome, I wear my hats all the time except in heavy down pours, at church (I leave it in the car) or at funerals. I always remove my hat when in doors. My name is Tom and I am from Orlando. Duggap

I wear my fedoras outside, fur felt in winter, straw in summer. I keep my hat on in a bar but generally take it off if I sit at a table with a woman. My guy friends, I could really care less. If I'm only going out for a quick little trip I might consider not wearing a hat. I wouldn't think of dressing up with one.

"What's a fedora?" is, I think, a little bit more of a gray area. I happen to think the porkpie style is a fedora, but I know others who wouldn't call a porkpie a fedora. It seems, most commonly, folks think of center dent and teardrop crown hats as fedoras. I don't, for example, consider homburgs or bowlers/derbys as fedoras.

Younger men tend to like stingier/narrower brims, which are associated with the late '50s, early '60s. I'm a big advocate--one might even say missionary--for stingy brim hats. Most guys I see in fedoras just look to me like the brim is way too big for their head.

I'm 29 and male, and I wear my hat generally outside. I'll take it off inside to eat, or to go inside for a doctor's appointment or an interview. I'd take it off for the anthem, the flag, and if I were to show up in court for anything (jury duty, traffic court, whatever).
You could probably find stuff in your local library and/or online on "hat etiquette".

Hope I'm not too late, with the difference in time zones and all

The only time I don't wear a fedora outside is when I'm dressed in manual work clothes, like old chinos and a T-shirt for mowing the lawns or working on my car.

I usually take the hat off when I go indoors, unless it's in a busy public place or a department store or bar. In private residences, doctor's surgeries, etc.I always take my hat off.

Best of luck with the assignment!

I've never been to Manhattan, but I have had a drink or two while wearing my fedora ! lol

I wear my hat all the time, a lot of the time indoors. But never in church, I try to take it off when I enter into someones home and since belonging to the lounge have noticed that I take it off when I meet or greet someone.
My name is Russell and I'm from Arkansas.

Oh by way welcome to the Lounge and I hope you stay around and visit some.

I'm Tommy from New Orleans.
I believe I'm in line with many of my colleagues here:
I wear my hat almost every day. I doff it when I enter a building or a private residence, in Church and many other indoor venues. However, I leave it on inside if I'm in a store or similar type locale.

I sometimes go without if I'm going somewhere with my bride, since she's not totally sold on them and professes to dislike me with a hat. But that might be one day per week.

I don't generally wear a fedora for outdoor work, I favor a bucket in those situations, sometimes a ball cap. I WILL wear my Indiana Jones style with shorts and a t-shirt. Got compliments from opposing coaches when I wore it to coach my son's soccer team.
