Hi Link,
That is good a good photo for me. I still haven't had the chance to place my order for one. But I will probably do it today. A few posts back, there was a picture of a CD Delux in Silverbelly that looked almost tan or light golden to me. That kind of made me hesitate. I can do a cement or sand color, but I like the idea of a more silver color better.
Well, they are not cement or sand colored IMO, but definitely more tan or light golden. Wearing mine now, it's a great hat. I'd still suggest you try one for yourself.

Well, I ordered mine yesterday. If it is more tan than silver, I'll probably end up getting a Resistol cowboy in long oval. I have my fingers crossed for a silver one.

Well, I got mine in about a week ago, and only began to shape it last night (long story). Anyway, it is more "tan" than what I would consider silverbelly. But it does look more silverbelly outside and from a distance. I can't say that I would call it silverbelly though. However, I really do love the color and the hat. This is also the first hat I've actually shaped myself. I'm doing a center dent with a pinch in front. I'll try to post a pic or two in the next couple of days. I'm fairly bad with the camera, so don't hold my feet to the fire on this one.

Oh, the wife loves it as well, which is always a plus!

I held out as long as I could and now have one on the way. That's it for me and CD's. There aren't any more colors to get. I've ended up trimming them all to 2 5/8" but think I'll try and keep this one full size for maximum sun protection. I did inquire if the Hattery had any extra ribbon should a brim-trim be in the future and the answer was a negative.

I'm late to the party, but thanks to gtdean48 for spearheading the endeavor! Love these hats!

Compared to all Resistol Silverbellies I have, modern & vintage, it is going to appear tan. Not a bad color but still tan. HTH

I got two, for different shapes. As far as color, I'm useing a couple of open roads for comparison, one older the other brand new. The Campdraft is definetly more on the tan side than is the OR which is a "whiter" or more silver gray. As far as the new OR, they are both in the same tan range although called silverbellyl.

Help deciding between heritage and imperial camp draft

Hi,

I've decided to order a campdraft in silverbelly from hatsdirect but am having a hard time choosing between the heritage and imperial. I own a banjo paterson in heritage and a Fed Iv in Imperial so I know how the felts differ in general, but here I'm having trouble deciphering if the two felt types are the same colour or not. There is a lot of critiiscm on this thread that the colour of the heritage is too tan/beige to be called silverbelly, and many are suggesting the heritage is a darker (more beige) shade than the imperial. Certianly all the pictures of the heritage appear darker than all the pictures I can find of the imperial, however I can only find two posts (copied below) that directly compare the two (i.e. have both in the same photo) and to my eye they look identical in colour. So my question is, is there a significant difference in colour between the heritage and imperial versions or not?

I've emailed hatsdirect directly and they promise me the two are the same shade, but this thread has me spooked. I'd prefer the heritage, but if it really is significantly darker I'll likely go for the imperial.

......Here it is next to my old CD (old hat on the right):

Strangely enough, the felt on this new hat seems just a tiny bit lighter in color than the old. However, the ribbon and binding are abit darker. The felt is noticably finer, but much stiffer than the felt on the old CD.

Well, I just got home and opened my new package. Let me tell y'all...you will not be disappointed. Without doubt, this is the nicest new hat I have ever owned. Here are some of my first impressions:

Akubra didn't skimp...the size runs large. I'll bet my new hat measures in at a full 7 3/4 as opposed to 7 5/8 (61) tagged size. But no worries...I expect the new hat to shrink to my head, as have my other four Akubras.

To my eye, the color is very close to that of my silverbelly Imperial CD, but my eye has never been worth a damn at discerning subtle shades of color. Sorry.

The felt is very smooth and more dense than that of my Imperial CD. I believe that the Heritage actually weighs a bit more than the Imperial, but the differnence, if any, is very slight.

The sweat is wider than the Imperial's...but not quite as wide as that of a 'fifties Stetson. Still, I think the wider sweat gives the Heritage that "vintage look" that many of us love.

Here are some photos. Of course, I didn't get home until almost dark, so I had to use a flash. Also, while the Heritage is just out of its box, the Imperial has two years of frequent wear under its belt, however that may affect its color.

I have both grade felts in silverbelly and I can't tell much difference in the color. The Heritage felt appears to be more finely pounced and as a result they tend to reflect light differently. I think that is why they appear different in photographs. Separately they look exactly the same to me.

Ok cool, I'll go for the heritage then. Thanks.

I am thinking of stepping outside the box for a hat. I prefer mostly a fedora that is 2" brim, more business appropriate. However, I did like my Stetson Stylemaster, but it was a fedora look with a brim that was too wide for me.

What are the brim sizes on this and what was the price? Is this still available? I understand if someone has to PM me this rather then post it here.

The campdraft has a 2 7/8th inch brim. The prices for the Imperial and Heritage versions are AU$118 and AU$175 respectively. I'm not sure what the current AU$ to US$ exchange rate is though.

And yes, its still available. I think hats direct stock it on a permanent basis now.

The Heritage Campdraft Deluxe is now offered in Moonstone as well as Silverbelly. Moonstone is not available in the Imperial grade CD tho...

Don't suppose you could provide a link to a photo of one of those could you? I looked, but can't seem to find any moonstone campdrafts......

The other thing to consier is that the felts a dyed in batches and being "organic" there can be variations in how the color take up finishes. It's not like 3M coloring plastics and everything is exactly the same. Unless you wear both hats at the same time, chances are no one is going to point out any differences. Go for the best quality you can afford or select the one you like best, I doubt you're gonna be despondant with disappointment. Enjoy.
