Audrey's famous Breakfast At Tiffany's LBD (designed by Givenchy) is being auctioned at Christie's today and is expected to fetch between £50,000 and £70,000.

Proceeds are to go to a charity in India that works with the under-privileged.

I wouldn't be surprised to see it go into six figures and I'd be interested to see who buys it; whether it will be an organisation or an individual.

I saw this on a news show the other day, and was also surprised by the estimated price. They estimated $100,000 American, which I thought was low. It'll be interesting to see what it actually goes for and to whom it goes to.

The auction is now on - wonder when we'll know? I just got this from the Beeb website:

Hepburn's Tiffany dress on sale

Hepburn won an Oscar nomination for Breakfast at Tiffany's
A black Givenchy dress worn by Audrey Hepburn in Breakfast At Tiffany's is to be auctioned at Christie's later.
The iconic garment is expected to fetch £50,000-£70,000 for the charity City of Joy Aid, which helps India's poor.

Also for sale is the two-piece suit Hepburn wore in the 1963 movie Charade, along with autographs and film posters.

The London auction also features the hideous Christmas jumper Colin Firth wore in Bridget Jones's Diary and a collection of James Bond's guns.

A Walther PP brandished by Sean Connery in the first 007 film, Dr No, is expected to sell for £25,000.

Love letter

Colin Firth's Christmas jumper is expected to sell for £600
Other firearms in the sale include the jet gun from You Only Live Twice and Pierce Brosnan's Walther P99 from Die Another Day.

All of the guns have been decommissioned due to legal requirements.

Some of the more unusual items for sale include Errol Flynn's hip flask, a love letter written by Edith Piaf and a French maid's costume from the Kenny Everett Television Show.

There are also several Star Wars items available, including a test mask for the android C3-PO and a design for Obi Wan Kenobi's costume, which is expected to sell for £3,000.

A rare prop from Harry Potter And The Goblet Of Fire, a programme for the Quidditch World Cup, is also for sale.

The booklet, signed by star Daniel Radcliffe, is expected to fetch £3,000-£5,000 at the auction, which takes place at 1500 GMT.

Thanks for posting the numbers. I was not surprised it went for that much more than the estimate. There is a lot of disposable income floating around out there.

I have mixed feelings about such matters. There's an awful lot of homeless people out there too. [huh]

Still, we don't yet know whether it was an individual that bought it...

ETA: I just saw a clip on News 24, showing the dress closing at £410,000 yet the ticker at the bottom of the screen was saying it went for £467,000! :eusa_doh:

Apparently the auction is still going on, so won't know until after it ends who bought it...assuming they wish to be named.

I feel less bad about my Ebay purchases now! lol

£410,000 (approx $807,943)   I haven't found out yet who bought it.
Wow, that's a lot of dough! I expected that it would go for higher than estimated, but I was thinking more along the lines of $250,000 American dollars.
It'd be nice to find out who purchased it. At least the money is going to charity. But, it is amazing to see what people will, and won't spend their money on.

Agreed. I suppose the person/people that bought it may well have given that amount to a charity anyway - I hope so.

SOLD!!!

LONDON - The black Givenchy gown worn by Audrey Hepburn in the film "Breakfast at Tiffany's" sold at auction Tuesday for $807,000.

The price, paid by a telephone bidder, was almost six times the highest pre-sale estimate.

The iconic garment had been expected to fetch between $98,000 and $138,000 as part of a sale of film and television memorabilia at Christie's auction house in London.

Proceeds from the sale will go to the charity City of Joy Aid, which helps India's poor.

Hepburn wore the dress for one of her best-known roles, as eccentric Manhattan socialite Holly Golightly in the 1961 film adaptation of Truman Capote's novel.

The opening scenes of the film show Golightly in the dress emerging from a taxi on 5th Avenue with her brown-bag breakfast to ogle diamonds and luxury goods in the storefront windows of Tiffany & Co.

Images of Hepburn dressed as Golightly _ with gloves, an elaborate pearl choker and trademark cigarette holder _ still endure.

Nah, that is why "charity auctions" need to exist.;)
agreed!
Hepburn did so much for charitable organizations. I do hope the people who received these funds will make good on their promise, and honor her memory by giving the complete proceeds to a charity that she was involved in.
