It would be so incredible to own a piece of movie history, not
to mention the fabric that was worn on one of our most beloved
actresses of all time. Alas, it is also out of my $ budget $

I just hope it ends up in appreciated hands.

Don't worry, it will. Neecerie's agreed to loan me 70,000 pounds to buy it. ;) (Right, Neecerie? Right!?!)

Proof that there was only one Audrey

Very cool that they are auctioning this dress for charity--does anyone know who donated it? Was it one of Audrey's sons or a collector?

I saw this photo that Christies distributed of an employee modeling the dress and thought to myself that there was only one Audrey--Hepburn always exuded such class, this girl really does look like a "party girl" in my opinion! I think it would have been much classier to display the dress on a mannequin with some elegant lighting.

Couldn't agree more IM. I'm open to be totally contradicted here, but I don't believe Miss H would ever have sat in the dress with that amount of thigh exposure, and the sunglasses are totally wrong! And the jewellery  What are they thinking! That picture is a travesty, a tragedy, I am speechless, undone, etc, etc, - and I'm not usually one to vent a strong opinion....:D

All I have to say about this girl wearing this divine dress is *Ewwwwww!*
Not many can pull it off, but there is not one ounce of class in that photo.
I don't mean to be mean, and I am sure the girl was incredibly excited to WEAR this dress, but I think I would have insisted on a better pose with some taste. The dress doesn't even fit her well on the top part. Perhaps that is why she is seated because it would be too obvious how ill fitting the dress is.

Oh well....don't mind this peanut factory...:p Just shucking some shells

Oh,that I could ever have worn that dress!

If I were to pose in it, would stand in front of Tiffany's at 5 a.m. with a Shrafft's bag and a cup of coffee.

I actually did that, you know, when I lived in NYC. Put on the shades, had a donut and coffee cup. All I was lacking was the black dress and Audrey's incredible classiness.

Hey,come to think of it, I do have the black dress. Mine is the Mattell Barbie version of AH, including the sunglasses, jewelry and Shrafft's bag with coffee cup.

That doesn't even look like the same dress Audrey wore! I didn't even realize the dress had a slit up the side, and it really doesn't fit her well at all. It would appear that she has a D sized chest squished into an A sized dress. Reminds me of Jennifer Love Hewitt playing Audrey. I'm sure she was very excited to get to wear the dress, but that image is just very sad.

Everytime I see that picture I just wince at the strain on the seams--it's clearly too small for her, and I hate it that she has the cigarette without a holder. That's picky I know but, come on, they must have known Audrey fans would be looking at the photo.

I can't express it eloquently but that photo encompasses everything that depresses me about our modern age. Ugh.

On a happier note, I read that Givenchy donated the dress and that it will be on display in New York in September prior to the auction. I may have to make a pilgrimage.

I didn't realize the dress had a slit either Decodoll but you can see it on the poster.

HAHAHA...yeah...it does. Guess I never really thought about it. I have a magnet of that poster on my refrigerator too! You can't see it when you watch the movie. :)

Now this is more like it!

Natalie Portman is modeling The Dress in the latest issue of Harpers Bazaar. The interior photos are lovely and far better than the original publicity photo.

I agree, Madame C. The dress wasn't designed for sitting. Many couture cocktail gowns can experience ruinous malfunctions, at the hem and neckline especially, when wearers assume a seated position.

Party girl is right, she looks like all puffy not slim enough like Hepburn and thats a shame, because one false move and she'll rip it, look at how tight it is on her, mannequin is more deserving.

On a related note Audrey Hepburn's black dress from the film Breakfast at Tiffany's is part of a major exhibition of Hollywood costumes at London's Victoria and Albert Museum

There is an ongoing debate on one of the Audrey Hepburn fan forums that the dress that was auctioned off may not have been the exact one that Audrey wore in the BAT movie and that there may have been up to 5 dresses made for the movie (looking at the promotional stills and the opening sequence to BAT you can see that there is no thigh high split in the dress).

On a separate note the pink cocktail dress from BAT was purchased by Newbridge Silverware Museum (based in County Kildare) - I've had the pleasure of visiting their visitor centre a few times and have seen some amazing movies costumes housed there including the pink dress from BAT:
