Henna hair dying

I switched to Lush's Caca Rouge (which is, I believe, mixed with clove and Irish moss) a few years ago, after trying out several henna hair dye brands, and I just love it! Actually, I also tried the Caca Noir, which is henna with indigo - and gave me a lovely reddish-dark brown (reminiscent of sable), but I just earned for red)))
One thing I do, that probably few people have courage to try - I leave it in for the night. Just put the henna on before going to bed, wrap clingfilm on it and a designated headscarf - it never leaked yet))))))

I have left the henna on overnight also with good results. Cling wrap is the key there - it's like a mud mask treatment for your hair!

The after is two days post-henna, so it may darken a little more, but so far, I love it.

Leaving it in overnight only works if you're going for a colour that needs a long time to sit -- I only keep mine in three or four hours because I'm using henna/cassia to get a light copper, and leaving it in any longer makes it too dark for me!
Presently I'm using Moroccan henna & cassia from Henna Sooq and I really like it. I mix it with either hot water, chamomile tea, or hibiscus tea & nothing else. I usually mix up a batch and then freeze it in between uses, because I also henna roots-only and not the length, so it lasts an awful long time.

i've just started using the lush hennas and i'm really happy about them... had never dyed my hair before since i didn't like the 'damages hair' part, but i'm starting to go grey at 21 and my brown hair was getting mousy and blah.

before:

after the first go:

i used two blocks of the brun and two blocks of the rouge. a trick for getting them in pieces quickly: put them in a plastic bag and have a go with a hammer... it makes them melt faster. i then just poured hot water over it.

the color was nice and it covered my greys but it was a bit too subtle... you only saw the red in direct sunlight. so i did a second layer:

using two blocks of rouge and one block of brun this time, and left it on overnight. i do love my hair and when i stopped by the lush store earlier today i got compliments from every single shop assistent... it looks very natural and feels amazing. i did brush out the curls after washing it, that's why my hair went from curly to straight!

Hello ladies,

Giving this thread a little bump! Has anyone gone from salon coloring to henna coloring? I'm trying to get away from the processed stuff, but all I've hear are horror stories about going to henna if you have ever had your hair colored in a salon. I've been coloring my hair since I was about 16 and been every shade you can think! I believe I've finally landed on red, which is why I want to turn to henna. Plus if I can save the $75+ a month doing. My hair that would be a bonus. I talked to a few gals at Lush and they've said if I can't keep up with the henna or I just fail miserably at it, I can still get it colored at a salon as long as I wait a good 8 weeks after a henna treatment. Anyone know this to be true or not? Please share if you've gone either way with your hair (salon to henna or henna to salon)! Thank you!

I've recently started to henna my hair with Lush Caca Rouge after a "red to platinum in 2 weeks" disaster. I can't believe I haven't used it before. So many years wasted on ineffective chemical dyes. I've always craved the lovely coppery flame colour it's given me and could never quite achieve it with any dyes. If I did ever get the colour it faded rapidly. So pleased to have found it. Better late than never!

I've always wondered about henna....how do you handle the regrowth? Sorry if its a dumb question!

My natural hair colour is a mousy blonde so the regrowth doesn't stand out too much. The beauty of the henna is that, as it's not damaging and it's cheap I just redye my whole head again. Now that I've used it a few times, I find it much easier to apply than chemical dyes as you can kinda just slap it on with your hands so it's not really any hassle. Also, because the henna is warm when you apply it it feels lovely!

Colouring over salon colour with henna should be fine. Issues come when you go to salons to get henna *out*. I don't know as much about Lush's henna because it's blended with things, not straight like I use, but I do know that very many gals have ruined their hair even at salons trying to take henna out.

I dye roots-only so... the new growth just gets coloured. I'm naturally strawberry blond, it's not very obvious growth on me.

I just dyed my hair with Lush's henna. My hair was bleached in march and they said there may be issues because of that so I used a mixture of rouge and marron first and then put rouge over the top of that. It's beautiful - like a really bright natural auburn which is actually pretty close to my natural colour but a bit brighter which is what i was after. I read that the issues with removing henna come because the peroxide opens up the hair cuticle (i dont know if that's strictly scientifically accurate) and it just drives the henna in deeper. So I think if you want to take it out you have to wait a while after you henna before you try and you may need to go darker first.

Hi Ladies! I haven't been on this site in quite some time, I had a similar username before. I noticed this thread and thought I'd mention Surya Brasil Henna Cream or Powder. It works amazingly well. I had salon colored and box colored hair and decided to switch it up, the metals have been removed from the product, so you can use it interchangeably. I'm currently using a mix of Dark Reddish Blonde and Copper and it adds some really great highlights!

Right now I´m looking into body art quality henna. It turns out you can buy little 3 gram sample packs of the various hennas from Mehandi.com to test out on a sample of hair. They suggest harvesting hair from your hair brush but I didn´t have much luck with that. However I just brought home some of my own hair from the salon floor, so now I can mix up these little potions and test them out.

My natural color is chestnut brown and I´d like to go to auburn. My hairstylist would use peroxide before adding color, and I just don´t like the idea. I think I´d rather use henna if I can get a nice result.

If you want to go darker, don't mix up the henna with water. You can either use black tea instead of water, or boil onion skins for a while, then put it all through a sieve and use the remaining water for your mix. I used to dye my hair with henna for many years, and this was a trick passed down from my Middle Eastern family and worked well for me. I am naturally a light brunette.
