I did figure it was a bit earlier than the classic film-noir hat but you very rarely see 'dress' hats over here

I love the quality of the 1930s and older hats, but for me the pinnacle of the fedora was the 1940s. The tall crowns and wide brims were fantastic and the felt and build quality was still excellent.

Personally, when I consider the earlier soft felt hats I lean towards the curled brims, and not just homburgs. There was a lot of diversity in the early part of the 20th Century and some of the styles just check all the boxes for me.

this one is rock solid, very stiff felt like a bowler, which makes sense given that Henry heath made top-qual bowlers 100 years ago

With these old hat we talk of soft felt hats as those that you can shape. This felt allow you to crease the crown etc. Stiff felt hats are those that you can’t shape at all due to the stiffness of the felt (e.g. the derby / bowler).

I’m very surprised that this Henry Heath is stiff. Firm maybe, but not stiff (“rock solid”). That’s very odd.

I am looking for the EXACT same thing, down to the color. I'm referring to the exact 1.5" grosgain, the height of the hat, and the bound edge. I noticed the double stitch on the bow, and thought that meant it was a Pilgrim Fedora, but not sure!

Any help is appreciated! If you'd like to see better pics of the hat, you can just search "Johny Depp fedora" and a large number of pics come up of this hat.

My hat size is normally 7 5/8, but wondering how much these hats stretch over time. Would take new or used, don't care about that part, just as long as the hat is exact! Note: I've already found those ones on amazon, the custom ones for $400, not really interested in spending that much on a hat!

Also, what's that thing on the side - looks like a button and a line of material following the grosgrain banding. I think it's called a "windmill" or something. What's its purpose?

Google doesn't have much to say about this brand, but from what I gather, the guy made hats in England in the 70s. Feels like it's velvet. Does anyone have any more info on this hat or Andrew Willie hats?

Mr. Depp likely has his hats custom made for him - I'm not certain he buys vintage.

The hat you are seeking is a very common type of hat and can be found on eBay, Etsy, or a variety of other places but will require some effort to get exactly what you want. A custom ,as you indicated, can be $400 or more, but would be your best avenue for achieving your strict standards.

Incidentally, if you are going to require the hat be EXACTLY like the one in the pic, down to the dimensions and color, what dimensions are you looking for? The photo doesn't give us much to go on there (though I can surmise the hat's dimensions pretty closely).

The button and cord are called a wind trolley or wind cord and is used to affix your hat to your lapel in case it gets blown off your head in the wind. What do you mean by double stitched bow? Are you speaking of the fold in the bow keep? Not certain why you would think that makes it a Pilgrim.

Either way, if you find this hat for yourself, I recommend avoiding Amber Heard, no matter how many times she calls you.

It is called a wind cord and it is intended to button to your jacket lapel in the event you are in a strong wind. Saves you from losing your hat. If you want this exact hat the odds are strongly leaning towards you having to order a custom. Especially since you have a larger head size which narrows down the used/vintage market to a sliver..

I'm not sure of the exact dimensions, but the hat looks tall like a Pilgrim Fedora. It seems to be a taller fit, and the brim would just be whatever default is on a fedora like this. Nothing special there. In fact, I wouldn't want it any larger than normal.
Thanks for the heads up about Heard - I've had all calls sent straight to voicemail, hahaha

EDIT: Double stitched - I just meant the square part in the middle of the bow has a "doubled" effect, like it's folded over on itself. I've only seen this on Pilgrim Fedoras in my searches, but I'm so new to Fedoras, that they could be on other makes/manufacturers' hats, but I wouldn't know yet.

Does it look in the pic like the bow is further forward than standard or is he wearing the hat off centre?

The turn on the bow keeper is fairly standard. It crops up in multiple forms on a great many hats.....custom, modern and vintage. Check with Miami Bruno an Ebay seller of vintage. He lists a great many vintage hats at fair prices. He only seldom offers hats as large as your needs but he is worth a shot. Save you from sorting through the usual drek on Ebay.

Felt can appear to change colors in lighting too. Getting an exact duplicate will be tough.

$400 is on the more reasonable end of the price range particularly if your a size 7 5/8 where your chancing of finding a vintage hat that duplicates Mr. Depp’s is unlikely. You can also expect to pay $300 (ish) or more for a vintage fedora in 7 5/8.

You could get Mr. P at Agnoulita to make you a duplicate in rabbit for felt for approximately $200 plus shipping. He offers wind trolleys too, but there are no guarantees that it will be an exact match…he does have access to more felt and ribbon colors than just about anyone else.

The dimensions are unknown on Depp’s hat. Assuming he has a smaller head than your 7 5/8, the exact same dimensions may look a lot different on you as the proportions will have changed. You could match his hat in every respect and still get one that looks different.

I'm starting to learn that there is a color shift. I thought this was beige, then bone, then ecru, I've been looking all over. If I could just find this one (below) in my size, I'd be super happy. It's Pilgrim. It's the closest thing I could find to JD's and it's like 99%, but it's only 7 1/4... Although, this one doesn't appear to be as tall as his. But the look is spot on to me, aside from the wind cord.
