I'm not sure this is the right place, so if the mods want to move it, that's fine by me. Please help me decide on my New Year's Eve party dress. I am the hostess, so I must look smashing, but most of our friends will probably be in jeans. I'll be making Butterick 6582 in either taffeta or satin (the black view). Should I go with the classic little black dress or something daring like burgandy or maybe even red? I don't have red shoes and probably won't have money for them before the party, so it will have to look good with black shoes.

If it were me, I'd make something I would wear again and again. I think burgundy is more your color than red or black.

I love the color blue for dresses, but looking at your avatar I would agree with brocade. Maybe the burgundy with some gold throughout it. Be sure to post up a picture of the dress when you're done. Have fun!!!

There is a great Oriental Green Brocade in the clearance section on that site that you mentioned K.kat........., I just checked and it's a real bargain.

Green - redheads in green look smashing. But then I think about a great blue - more aqua than royal and you could look fantastic in that with your coloring.

If it's something that you want to use for years to come then perhaps I might go black and accessorize with color. But it sounds like you are a weight-loss machine and this might not be a permanent fixture in your new wardrobe. If that's the case I'd definitely go for a punch of color.

I have that dress in green and I have red tones in my hair (my hair was deep red when I took these photos a year ago). Green always looks great on red heads.

I think you'll look fabulous in that dress by the way - it's a really gorgeous shape (gives a really lovely womanly silhouette), dead easy to put together, and it'll look amazing in satin.

Satin is stainable

more than taffeta, if you're mixing and serving drinks it's a good idea to steer clear of satin! One little spill and you have a watermark forever.

Brocade or taffeta for sure!! I think if you went red, there's a red taffeta that has black undertones that would be good.. same with the green.

I will always swear that satin ADDS POUNDS. And since you've worked so hard and you look so hot, I wouldn't go there. Look at People mag some time, even the super skinny stars show all their bulges and such when wearing satin gowns.

A hot little oriental brocade would be nice...

I didn't even think about water spots on the satin, or the added pounds. The iridescent green taffeta looks great, I think I'll use that. Thanks, ladies!

I went to JoAnn's and lucked out. They had their taffeta on sale for $3.49. I'm glad I went to a brick and mortar shop. I held up the emerald green to my face in front of a mirror, then the peacock blue. It was no contest. The blue made my blue eyes just pop. I can't wait to get started on this!
